<br />
'Tis the season to be jolly and you can't get any more jolly than a silly elf. My <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2013/10/a-gnome-for-all-seasons-klickitat.html" target="_blank">gnome cookie cutters</a> are all dressed up for the Holidays with brand new stencils designed just for them. Get the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/165332937/boy-and-girl-gnome-cookie-cutters-6?" target="_blank">complete set in my Etsy store</a> at a special price for Christmas! <br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RPV-PC2DK8g/VH_9U6ZKhyI/AAAAAAAAEN4/OjTNYWHZ1N0/s1600/KlickitatStreet%2BChristmas%2BElf%2BCookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RPV-PC2DK8g/VH_9U6ZKhyI/AAAAAAAAEN4/OjTNYWHZ1N0/s1600/KlickitatStreet%2BChristmas%2BElf%2BCookies.jpg" height="640" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
You can use the gnome cookie cutters to make elves by gently curling the hat to the side before baking the cookies. You'll get a lot more designs out of the cutters if you don't think of one just as the "boy" or "girl". The "boy" cutter doubles as a girl with a short dress. The "girl" also works for boys in long pants and coats. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KpzzHD08PB8/VH_9bU1s1-I/AAAAAAAAEOQ/PUuJ4s81aKw/s1600/KlickitatStreet%2BSanta%2BMrs%2BClaus%2BCookie%2BCutters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KpzzHD08PB8/VH_9bU1s1-I/AAAAAAAAEOQ/PUuJ4s81aKw/s1600/KlickitatStreet%2BSanta%2BMrs%2BClaus%2BCookie%2BCutters.jpg" height="356" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Trim the hat off the gnomes to make Santa and Mrs. Claus. You can <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2013/10/easy-party-hat-cookies.html" target="_blank">visit my party hat post</a> for a full tutorial on cutting characters with different hats from these cutters.<br />

<br />
Use the stencils with food color or royal icing to dress up your cookies. The cutter sets include 6 stencil designs scaled down to be just the right size for elf clothes. Each mini stencil measures 3.5" x 4" with a pattern area approx. 3" square.<br />
<br /> Turn the stencils this way and that and layer color and icing for even more different looks!<br />

I hope to add a few more stencil cutter sets to my shop this week so keep an eye out!<br />
Thanks!<br />

I can't imagine anyone reading my blog doesn't know of the fantastic cookie artist Lisa Snyder from <a href="http://thebearfootbaker.com/" target="_blank">The Bearfoot Baker</a>. If somehow you've arrived here from a strange alternate dimension you must go now and check out all her amazing work! I've been a huge fan of Lisa's since I started my own cookie journey. I love all the cute and silly critters she turn into cookies on a regular basis. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mBzPwSk7w7o/VG7q8lOrx3I/AAAAAAAAEMw/O884XJLqEsQ/s1600/100%2BAnimal%2BCookies%2BBook%2Bby%2Bthebearfootbaker.com.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mBzPwSk7w7o/VG7q8lOrx3I/AAAAAAAAEMw/O884XJLqEsQ/s1600/100%2BAnimal%2BCookies%2BBook%2Bby%2Bthebearfootbaker.com.jpg" height="635" width="640" /></a></div>
Lisa recently had her very own book published, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/100-Animal-Cookies-Step---Step/dp/1438005229/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1416598518&sr=8-1&keywords=100+animal+cookies" target="_blank"><i>100 Animal Cookies: A Super Cute Menagerie to Decorate Step-by-Step</i></a>, and it is filled with cute and colorful cookie designs that are sure to make you smile. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

When I saw the design for Lisa's bear in a sleeping bag cookie I had to make one for myself. Seriously, I think this is the cutest cookie I have ever made!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kRFMHXs7CQs/VEncrvqj87I/AAAAAAAAEMA/8QuploX_KPQ/s1600/KlickitatStreet%2Bfall%2Bbirds%2Bcookie%2Btutorial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kRFMHXs7CQs/VEncrvqj87I/AAAAAAAAEMA/8QuploX_KPQ/s1600/KlickitatStreet%2Bfall%2Bbirds%2Bcookie%2Btutorial.jpg" height="562" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
These days I am all about quick and easy cookies and I think these birds are just the thing. I may not get around to making Halloween cookies this year but I used a Halloween cookie cutter to make these little guys and that's kind of the same thing, right?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AXqzpRl4vbY/VEncnMMqtmI/AAAAAAAAELo/GFu72uGRVzA/s1600/KlickitatStreet%2Bcutting%2Bbird%2Bcookies%2Bfrom%2Bghost%2Bcutter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AXqzpRl4vbY/VEncnMMqtmI/AAAAAAAAELo/GFu72uGRVzA/s1600/KlickitatStreet%2Bcutting%2Bbird%2Bcookies%2Bfrom%2Bghost%2Bcutter.jpg" height="552" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I found this little ghost cutter with the Halloween things at Michael's Arts and Crafts a couple of weeks ago. As ghosts go I thought it was a bit strange but I quickly saw that it would make a great bird. Either those little points are supposed to be the ghosts hands or he is wearing a pirate hat. Regardless, trim one side off and you have a simple bird. I particularly like that you can make birds with turned heads from the same cutter!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZyNb0Zw39hA/VEncpGUtjVI/AAAAAAAAEL0/rCLPw8SWsEc/s1600/KlickitatStreet%2Bdecorating%2Bfall%2Bbird%2Bcookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZyNb0Zw39hA/VEncpGUtjVI/AAAAAAAAEL0/rCLPw8SWsEc/s1600/KlickitatStreet%2Bdecorating%2Bfall%2Bbird%2Bcookies.jpg" height="546" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<ol>
<li>I started by using a small spatula to scrape on some thick white royal icing for the bird's belly. The thick icing will rather quickly and I think the texture adds some interest.</li>
<li>After the belly has dried for a few minutes outline the bird's body in whatever color you like. </li>
<li>Flood-fill the outline.</li>
<li>Allow the flood icing to dry for several hours before adding beaks and a few simple details.</li>
</ol>
That's all there is to it. Throw in some simple leaves and flowers and you have a cute and easy fall platter!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mp5Wr7pnyr0/VEncoSlj9HI/AAAAAAAAELw/o4ansEbLf5Q/s1600/KlickitatStreet%2Bfall%2Bbirds%2Bcookie%2Bplatter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mp5Wr7pnyr0/VEncoSlj9HI/AAAAAAAAELw/o4ansEbLf5Q/s1600/KlickitatStreet%2Bfall%2Bbirds%2Bcookie%2Bplatter.jpg" height="520" width="640" /></a></div>

I hope you all enjoy your weekend!<br />

Like a "loooooooong time" as in months and months. Some family health issues have kept me away from my blog for a while but I'm so happy you've all stayed with me because today I'm announcing an addition to <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/KlickitatStreet" target="_blank">my Etsy shop</a>; cookie stencils!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9bzD8Ftbkdg/VByoaVYM1KI/AAAAAAAAELI/vp0xlkGHP2c/s1600/KlickitatStreet%2Bcookie%2Bstencils.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9bzD8Ftbkdg/VByoaVYM1KI/AAAAAAAAELI/vp0xlkGHP2c/s1600/KlickitatStreet%2Bcookie%2Bstencils.jpg" height="488" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Stencils are such a fun and easy way to add extra interest to cookies. When I first saw them popping up in the cookie-sphere I thought, "I have to do that!" I've taken special thought in making stencils that would work well for cookie decorating as well as other small crafts like card making and scrap booking. The overall size of my stencils is about 8.5 x 5.5 with a design area of 5 x 6" so they can also be used to embellish 4 x 6 photos and Project Life cards. The stencils have wide handles on the sides for easier positioning and lifting and are made from durable, washable plastic that is 7 mil thick (the stencils are clear plastic and any color in the images is just to help with taking photos)<br /> Most designs are available as a 5.5" square upon request if you prefer to store your stencils all together in a 6" binder.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Rtt9eChwzwo/VByoY4RjObI/AAAAAAAAELA/kEJKylYEn-w/s1600/general%2Bstencil.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Rtt9eChwzwo/VByoY4RjObI/AAAAAAAAELA/kEJKylYEn-w/s1600/general%2Bstencil.jpg" height="462" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I've started out with a few Halloween designs in <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/KlickitatStreet" target="_blank">my Etsy store</a> today so stop by sometime and have a look. There will be lots more coming every week as well as tutorials and other fun things. <br /><br />
Thanks so much!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ok5-hXC24GQ/U0TN9nl8Z9I/AAAAAAAAED0/Pgs06htZ88U/s1600/KlickitatStreet+royal+babies+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ok5-hXC24GQ/U0TN9nl8Z9I/AAAAAAAAED0/Pgs06htZ88U/s1600/KlickitatStreet+royal+babies+cookies.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Today's post is especially fun because several cookie artists decided to have a virtual baby shower for two of my favorite cookiers and I get to be a part of it! Both Georganne from <a href="http://www.lilaloa.com/" target="_blank">LilaLoa</a> and Callye from <a href="http://sweetsugarbelle.com/" target="_blank">SweetSugarBelle</a> recently had baby girls on the same day if you can believe it. Since both of these fabulous cookie gurus are "cookie queens" their little girls are sure to be cookie princesses. <br />
I wanted to bring a little inspiration from both artists for this set and when I think of Georganne and Callye's cookie styles I think creative cutter re-purposing, bold color and a touch of silliness. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jFxfp2YMPdo/U0y13pJ2uQI/AAAAAAAAEEU/GgsXjaOeGUk/s1600/Klickitat+Street+carrot+baby+cutters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jFxfp2YMPdo/U0y13pJ2uQI/AAAAAAAAEEU/GgsXjaOeGUk/s1600/Klickitat+Street+carrot+baby+cutters.jpg" height="572" width="640" /></a></div><br />
I used a basic carrot cookie cutter to make my baby Princess cookies. The carrot turned out to be the perfect shape for the crown and the swaddled baby and if you don't happen to have a carrot cutter this is just the right time of year to find one. My carrot cutters were both a little long so I simply trimmed the point off the carrot before baking. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xTb4yjU7bTI/U0y2mwPp8dI/AAAAAAAAEEo/FucutLT4yuE/s1600/KlickitatStreet+carrot+baby+cookies+steps.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xTb4yjU7bTI/U0y2mwPp8dI/AAAAAAAAEEo/FucutLT4yuE/s1600/KlickitatStreet+carrot+baby+cookies+steps.jpg" height="384" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<ol><li>Start by filling the face shape in flesh-toned royal icing. If you feel you need a guide to get the head the right shape and size then make a paper template and trace the head onto your cookie first.</li>
<li>Allow the face to dry for a little bit and then add the blanket in sections letting each section dry for a couple minutes before you add the next.</li>
<li>Add the crown in gold royal icing and let the cookies dry for several hours or overnight.</li>
</ol><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hrdbFreL81M/U0y13bebFGI/AAAAAAAAEEQ/KlVV5r33Q48/s1600/KlickitatStreet+carrot+baby+cookies+details.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hrdbFreL81M/U0y13bebFGI/AAAAAAAAEEQ/KlVV5r33Q48/s1600/KlickitatStreet+carrot+baby+cookies+details.jpg" height="460" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Once the base has dried add a few piping details to bring the cookies to life. That's all there is to making the Princess cookies, not too difficult right? Of course every royal baby also needs a throne. Callye has designed some of her own cookie cutters and I used her <a href="http://www.karenscookies.net/SugarBelles-School-Bus-Cookie-Cutter-KC_p_1963.html" target="_blank">bus cookie cutter</a> to make the thrones. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-G9QbiVPCzbI/U0y10TW8z3I/AAAAAAAAEEI/BcDfIdRIQwM/s1600/Klickitat+Street+bus+throne+cookies+steps.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-G9QbiVPCzbI/U0y10TW8z3I/AAAAAAAAEEI/BcDfIdRIQwM/s1600/Klickitat+Street+bus+throne+cookies+steps.jpg" height="640" width="638" /></a></div><br />
To make the throne cookies: <br />
<ol><li>Start by piping the sections of the throne</li>
<li>Then fill one section at a time allowing each one to dry for a few minutes before filling the next to create dimension between the "cushions". </li>
<li>Allow the cushion sections to dry for a while and then add the arm rests and feet in gold royal icing. Let the cookies dry for several hours or overnight.</li>
<li>Finish up the thrones with a few simple piping details. </li>
</ol>-- <br />
<ol></ol><br />
Be sure to check out all the royal cuteness these other fantastic cookie artist made for the virtual baby shower. They are so sweet I almost can't stand it! <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-r5w3anEahJ8/Uun2C35XQ9I/AAAAAAAAECQ/ZgQHzGw3PLQ/s1600/KlickitatStreet+love+birds+Valentine+cookie+tutorial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-r5w3anEahJ8/Uun2C35XQ9I/AAAAAAAAECQ/ZgQHzGw3PLQ/s1600/KlickitatStreet+love+birds+Valentine+cookie+tutorial.jpg" height="544" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Valentine's Day is right around the corner but I think I'm still recovering from Christmas cookies! Thankfully these cute lovebirds were just the ticket to get me working again. If you need a quick cookie pick me up these little guys are super easy and cut from a common cookie cutter too! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2iu4jOJemCU/Uun15W20doI/AAAAAAAAECA/LkJG_Gj3vzg/s1600/KlickitatStreet+cutting+love+bird+Valentine+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2iu4jOJemCU/Uun15W20doI/AAAAAAAAECA/LkJG_Gj3vzg/s1600/KlickitatStreet+cutting+love+bird+Valentine+cookies.jpg" height="466" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I used a basic mustache cutter to cut the love bird cookies. Specifically, I used the mustache cutter from this <a href="http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?sku=2308-3740" target="_blank">3 pc cookie cutter set by Wilton</a> but most any mustache cutter will work just fine. You can cut single birds with your mustache cutter as well by using a moon cutter or <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2013/10/easy-party-hat-cookies.html" target="_blank">my half circle trick</a> to trim the mustache shape before baking.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uFSZoW3vPvk/Uun2FP30WgI/AAAAAAAAECg/SNo6EqZayK4/s1600/KlickitatStreet+love+birds+Valentine+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uFSZoW3vPvk/Uun2FP30WgI/AAAAAAAAECg/SNo6EqZayK4/s1600/KlickitatStreet+love+birds+Valentine+cookies.jpg" height="332" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
To decorate the love birds;<br />
<ol>
<li>Start by outlining and filling one of the birds in royal icing and let dry for 30 minutes or so. </li>
<li>Once the first bird has set up a bit, outline and fill the other bird.</li>
<li>Let the birds dry for several hours before adding a few simple piping details. </li>
</ol>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s8cZrJ-8oTM/Uun2EIf8lpI/AAAAAAAAECY/z3n8nA5dszw/s1600/KlickitatStreet+love+bird+Valentine+cookies+details.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s8cZrJ-8oTM/Uun2EIf8lpI/AAAAAAAAECY/z3n8nA5dszw/s1600/KlickitatStreet+love+bird+Valentine+cookies+details.jpg" height="640" width="496" /></a></div>
<br />
Most cookies come together in the detail step and as you can see these little guys are no exception. I used the <a href="http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?sku=2308-3740" target="_blank">lip cookie cutter from the same set</a> as the mustache and a <a href="http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?sku=2308-0178" target="_blank">flying heart</a> from this <a href="http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?sku=2308-0178" target="_blank">Valentine cookie cutter set</a> to make bigger cookies with a little more flair. I think the I heart U birds may just be my favorite of the bunch, but unfortunately I don't know where to buy that cutter any longer. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yh3D4zvxbgo/Uun19DeFiuI/AAAAAAAAECI/5_wzX0O2plY/s1600/KlickitatStreet+love+bird+Valentine+cookie+platter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yh3D4zvxbgo/Uun19DeFiuI/AAAAAAAAECI/5_wzX0O2plY/s1600/KlickitatStreet+love+bird+Valentine+cookie+platter.jpg" height="568" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Toss in a few whimsical flowers and hearts to round out a super cute and happy Valentine platter! <br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-A4DU2Q5dzOk/Uq_xdZicmGI/AAAAAAAAEBE/8jkgG3BkGdw/s1600/KlickitatStreet+kissing+elves+cookie+tutorial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="508" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-A4DU2Q5dzOk/Uq_xdZicmGI/AAAAAAAAEBE/8jkgG3BkGdw/s640/KlickitatStreet+kissing+elves+cookie+tutorial.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Yesterday, the fabulously sweet <a href="http://www.sweetsugarbelle.com/" target="_blank">Callye of Sweet Sugarbelle</a> had me as a guest on her blog to do a <a href="http://www.sweetsugarbelle.com/2013/12/christmas-mistletoe-cookies-with-klickitat-street-guest-post/" target="_blank">tutorial for mistletoe cookies</a>. When she asked me if I would make them I instantly said yes of course and then almost as fast I thought you can't have mistletoe without kissy elves!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zoNVS4yHjAI/Uq_s0qgCTuI/AAAAAAAAEAY/lKDehunWC4U/s1600/KlickitatStreet+kissy+elf+cookie+cutters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="408" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zoNVS4yHjAI/Uq_s0qgCTuI/AAAAAAAAEAY/lKDehunWC4U/s640/KlickitatStreet+kissy+elf+cookie+cutters.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For these cookies I pieced together a Santa face cookie cutter and a little snowman for Mrs Claus and then I used an ice cream cone cookie cutter for the elves. I had thought about having the characters both face each other to kiss but I was worried that seam between the cookies would just be too fragile. Now I think they are cuter this way though because you can easily add different expressions to the elf getting kissed! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Uj_AiuACtVc/Uq_s1rayNUI/AAAAAAAAEAk/1m0AMtosIIM/s1600/KlickitatStreet+piecing+santa+mrs+claus+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="304" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Uj_AiuACtVc/Uq_s1rayNUI/AAAAAAAAEAk/1m0AMtosIIM/s640/KlickitatStreet+piecing+santa+mrs+claus+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
To piece the cookies together first cut both shapes together to get a feel for where they overlap and then cut one of the shapes again by itself. Remove all the excess dough and attach the partial shape to the whole one on the cookie sheet for baking. The elf cookies were pieced the same way as Santa and Mrs Claus here. After the elf shapes were joined together on the baking sheet I gently curled the points of the cones to make curly elf hats.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4hpRQyjByw0/Uq_szPt2h-I/AAAAAAAAEAM/oHcC-q294fk/s1600/KlickitatStreet+kissy+elf+cookie+tutorial+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="348" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4hpRQyjByw0/Uq_szPt2h-I/AAAAAAAAEAM/oHcC-q294fk/s640/KlickitatStreet+kissy+elf+cookie+tutorial+1.jpg" width="640" /></a> <br />
<br />
To decorate these cookies;<br />
<ol>
<li> Start by outlining the turned kissing face in flesh toned icing. The trickiest element in the entire cookie is getting the turned face drawn correctly so if you need to cut a template or use a KopyKake then that is perfectly okay. I often use my <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2013/03/how-to-draw-on-cookie-with-ipad.html" target="_blank">iPad and the Camera Lucida app</a> to lay in a few shapes like this just to get started. </li>
<li>Let the outline set up just a little but not dry and flood fill the face shape. (I forgot to photograph that step so if it looks a little odd that's because I did it with the computer)</li>
<li>Wait a few minutes for the icing to dry and then add the shapes that sit next to the faces. </li>
</ol>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--HK_qda50l8/Uq_s0aDfmpI/AAAAAAAAEAU/V_zxvUuPCmA/s1600/KlickitatStreet+kissy+elf+cookie+tutorial+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="348" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--HK_qda50l8/Uq_s0aDfmpI/AAAAAAAAEAU/V_zxvUuPCmA/s640/KlickitatStreet+kissy+elf+cookie+tutorial+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<ol>
<li>Let the faces dry a bit before adding the hat bands, Mrs Claus bun and a few leaves for the flower in her hair. </li>
<li>Continue on working in pieces until all the base shapes are done.</li>
<li>Let the base dry for several hours before adding the final piping details.</li>
</ol>
Once you break it all down cookies like this are actually fairly simple to decorate. You can work on them all at once or in little bursts throughout the day whenever you have a minute or two. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eSdvQEbFKgg/Uq_xdHuSnfI/AAAAAAAAEBA/PaAPj_Gz-dk/s1600/KlickitatStreet+Kissing+Elves+and+Mistletoe+Cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="508" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eSdvQEbFKgg/Uq_xdHuSnfI/AAAAAAAAEBA/PaAPj_Gz-dk/s640/KlickitatStreet+Kissing+Elves+and+Mistletoe+Cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eTn9ULmsssQ/UqbB7tJHoyI/AAAAAAAAD-A/CUuMFR70KCY/s1600/KlickitatStreet+Camel+Cookie+Tutorial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="606" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eTn9ULmsssQ/UqbB7tJHoyI/AAAAAAAAD-A/CUuMFR70KCY/s640/KlickitatStreet+Camel+Cookie+Tutorial.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Last week I showed you how to make <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2013/12/three-wise-men-christmas-cookie-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Wise Men cookies</a> and today I have the camels! I've done my share of silly cookies but these camel cookies are easily the silliest ones I have ever made. If you want to add a little humor to a Christmas platter try just making the faces or you can get really crazy and make the bodies too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-g91USzFZyiA/UqbCSkYDUHI/AAAAAAAAD-Q/GmBYVAE-Cgc/s1600/KlickitatStreet+camel+bell+cookie+cutters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="524" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-g91USzFZyiA/UqbCSkYDUHI/AAAAAAAAD-Q/GmBYVAE-Cgc/s640/KlickitatStreet+camel+bell+cookie+cutters.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I cut the camel faces with 2 sizes of bell cookie cutters flipped upside down. The bell was the closest shape I could come up with and it works pretty well because of the way the shape narrows for the face and widens for the ears. Since bell cutters come in so many different sizes and shapes you have a lot of options. If your bell cutters have a large clapper or handle you can trim that away when you cut your cookies.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-F4kQbErgscw/UqbCWp-1FrI/AAAAAAAAD-w/xYkx4P_6ecQ/s1600/KlickitatStreet+camel+cookie+tutorial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-F4kQbErgscw/UqbCWp-1FrI/AAAAAAAAD-w/xYkx4P_6ecQ/s640/KlickitatStreet+camel+cookie+tutorial.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<ol>
<li>This first step is just for locking in the shape of the head. Using tan piping icing pipe a roundish shape . Mark the mid-line of the circle and then pipe the large cheeks down around and back to the mid-line. </li>
<li>While the outline is still wet fill the entire area</li>
<li>Let the face dry for a few minutes and then add the ears and the lip. Then let the cookies dry for several hours so you can work on this base.</li>
</ol>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-x9rnBoE4MFQ/UqbCV2E9H_I/AAAAAAAAD-k/r3rknchPHJY/s1600/KlickitatStreet+camel+cookie+tutorial+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-x9rnBoE4MFQ/UqbCV2E9H_I/AAAAAAAAD-k/r3rknchPHJY/s640/KlickitatStreet+camel+cookie+tutorial+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
4. When the bases have dried a while add the nose. <br />
5. Let the nose dry for a few minutes and add the eyes. You can add the other details now too if you like. <br />
6. Let the eyes dry a bit and then add the eyelids and the white "shines" on the eyes. <br /> I also thought it would be fun to make a body for the camel on a separate cookie so the heads could be place and tilted in silly ways on top. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-K_KW43JEhoM/UqbCWIycvrI/AAAAAAAAD-s/Ms3M_dlJ6hQ/s1600/KlickitatStreet+camel+body+cookie+tutorial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="322" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-K_KW43JEhoM/UqbCWIycvrI/AAAAAAAAD-s/Ms3M_dlJ6hQ/s640/KlickitatStreet+camel+body+cookie+tutorial.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<ol>
<li>The bodies were cut from my favorite carrot cutter. </li>
<li>Pipe an egg-ish shape for the body and add the legs The way the lines alternate jutting out and coming in gives him his knobby knees. </li>
<li>Fill in the body before the outline dries. </li>
</ol>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Zx40_NLVhwM/UqbCSk0hmeI/AAAAAAAAD-U/eBl6-ag6nj4/s1600/KlickitatStreet+camel+body+cookie+tutorial+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="322" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Zx40_NLVhwM/UqbCSk0hmeI/AAAAAAAAD-U/eBl6-ag6nj4/s640/KlickitatStreet+camel+body+cookie+tutorial+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
4. When the body has dried for several hours add one hoof. <br />
5. Let the hoof dry a few minutes and then add the other to create dimension between them. Finish off the body with a few detail lines.<br />
6. Stack the smaller camel heads onto the bodies in silly ways. If you like you can "glue" the head to the body with stiff royal icing and then support the head on a separate cookie until the icing has fully dried. <br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oGD-cFazVKQ/UqGR_9t04WI/AAAAAAAAD9E/owrdHsPkGVM/s1600/KlickitatStreet+Three+Kings+Christmas+Cookie+Tutorial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="438" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oGD-cFazVKQ/UqGR_9t04WI/AAAAAAAAD9E/owrdHsPkGVM/s640/KlickitatStreet+Three+Kings+Christmas+Cookie+Tutorial.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I would like to tell you that I finally designed and decorated the entire Christmas Nativity in cookies...but I think another year is going to come and go without that happening. I was inspired to make the Three Wise Men though and honestly I think I if you really wanted you could probably make the entire nativity with just this cutter. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H6pppFZ-E_8/UqGR_bUyX1I/AAAAAAAAD9A/3xHrDhgP28k/s1600/KlickitatStreet+Three+Kings+Cookie+Cutter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H6pppFZ-E_8/UqGR_bUyX1I/AAAAAAAAD9A/3xHrDhgP28k/s640/KlickitatStreet+Three+Kings+Cookie+Cutter.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
To cut the Wisemen cookies I used a cutter of my own design. This cookie cutter is actually a <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/164622942/handmade-girl-gnome-cookie-cutter?ref=shop_home_active" target="_blank">"girl" gnome</a> but I designed the cutter with a large hat so it could be cut down into a variety of different characters. Plus the long dress makes it work for cloaks and robes too.<br />
I cut the hat down for the different crowns and also pieced an egg shape to the bottom half of the gnome cutter to make the king with a head scarf. For more on cutting different hats with this cutter <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2013/10/easy-party-hat-cookies.html" target="_blank">click here</a>. This cutter and my others are available to purchase in <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/KlickitatStreet" target="_blank">my Etsy store</a><a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/KlickitatStreet" target="_blank">. </a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tvGYOzITLQ0/UqGSBl5jxjI/AAAAAAAAD9Q/DIIlxBSwHtA/s1600/KlickitatStreet+Three+Kings+Cookie+Tutorial+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tvGYOzITLQ0/UqGSBl5jxjI/AAAAAAAAD9Q/DIIlxBSwHtA/s640/KlickitatStreet+Three+Kings+Cookie+Tutorial+1.jpg" width="476" /></a></div>
<br />
It's actually pretty easy to decorate cookies like this. Just take every shape one at a time and let each section set up a little before adding the next shape. <br />
<br />
1. Start by filling the face in flesh colored royal icing. I use the face as an anchor for all the other elements so it's important it's the right shape and in the right place. If you need to you can use a simple paper template to get the faces right. <br />
2. Let the face set up for a few minutes and then add the cloak and the lower sections of the hat<br />
3. Let those dry a little while and finish the hats and cloaks. At this point you should let the cookies dry for a few hours because you'll be adding sections on top of these.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-v_-ILDb_Ph0/UqGSGbxVc2I/AAAAAAAAD9Y/AitAAOn8hB8/s1600/KlickitatStreet+Three+Kings+Cookie+Tutorial+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-v_-ILDb_Ph0/UqGSGbxVc2I/AAAAAAAAD9Y/AitAAOn8hB8/s640/KlickitatStreet+Three+Kings+Cookie+Tutorial+2.jpg" width="457" /></a></div>
4. When the body has dried for several hours add the arms.<br />
5. Let the arms dry a bit and then add the beards or hair. <br />
6. Finally finish everything off with the little details. Instead of adding the gifts directly to the cookies, which would have made them more complicated, I made little minis and decorated them as I went. The little gifts can be "glued" to the finished cookies with royal icing giving them a little extra dimension.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lYcOVsJeISE/UqGSGpddeTI/AAAAAAAAD9c/3i_shOjXy9M/s1600/KlickitatStreet+Three+Kings+Face+Cookie+Cutters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lYcOVsJeISE/UqGSGpddeTI/AAAAAAAAD9c/3i_shOjXy9M/s640/KlickitatStreet+Three+Kings+Face+Cookie+Cutters.jpg" width="598" /></a></div>
<br />
If you like you can also make just the faces of the Wise Men. I found these ornament cookie cutters at Wal-mart this year and they are my current favorite cutters. I can see so many things in them. The curves and points work really well as beards and crowns especially when you piece the shapes together. To see the<a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2013/12/retro-christmas-ornament-cookies.html" target="_blank"> ornament cookies</a> I made with these cutters <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2013/12/retro-christmas-ornament-cookies.html" target="_blank">click here</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Zb1Zu9-Ewzc/UqGSHjQ5rmI/AAAAAAAAD9k/AhDcjRWOPhw/s1600/KlickitatStreet+Three+Kings+Face+Cookie+Tutorial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Zb1Zu9-Ewzc/UqGSHjQ5rmI/AAAAAAAAD9k/AhDcjRWOPhw/s640/KlickitatStreet+Three+Kings+Face+Cookie+Tutorial.jpg" width="355" /></a></div>
<br />
The steps to decorate the faces are pretty much the same as before: <br />
<ul>
<li>Start by adding the faces and let them dry for a few minutes. </li>
<li>Add the bottom of the hat and let dry again. </li>
<li>Finish the hats and add the beards.</li>
<li>Let the cookies dry for a few hours before topping them off with piping details.</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ErGlJznizOM/UqbCTcOWeGI/AAAAAAAAD-Y/OFufFcecY50/s1600/KlickitatStreet+Wise+Men+and+Camel+Cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="422" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ErGlJznizOM/UqbCTcOWeGI/AAAAAAAAD-Y/OFufFcecY50/s640/KlickitatStreet+Wise+Men+and+Camel+Cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

<br />
A few weeks ago Georganne over at <a href="http://www.lilaloa.com/" target="_blank">LilaLoa</a> posted<a href="http://www.lilaloa.com/2013/10/challenge-yourself-pantone-fall-colors.html" target="_blank"> a challenge to use this amazing color palett</a>e in a set of cookies. I thought the colors had a great retro feel to them and I love the style of retro Christmas Ornaments. Even though these colors are far from traditional they still work perfectly for Christmas cookies because as long as you use expected Christmas shapes you can use any color palette you like! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mdFtKytm2EM/Up7Wd7rFLoI/AAAAAAAAD8s/Qh164u-xIpY/s1600/KlickitatStreet+cutting+Christmas+Ornament+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="452" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mdFtKytm2EM/Up7Wd7rFLoI/AAAAAAAAD8s/Qh164u-xIpY/s640/KlickitatStreet+cutting+Christmas+Ornament+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
To cut the ornament cookies I used two cutters from Wal-mart this year. I love these little ornament cutters and I can see so many things in them. With just these basic shapes you can make a lot more ornaments just be piecing and trimming the cutters. For the traditional teardrop shape I used a circle to trim the yellow ornament cutter. Flip the cutters around and cut again to make something totally different or add a little bit of one to the other for more dimension. For more info on combing cookie cutters click <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2013/07/how-to-combine-cookie-cutters.html" target="_blank">here</a>. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QqLjjJYFiSA/Up7WbcvY6tI/AAAAAAAAD8U/0cTrlZe0MGw/s1600/KlickitatStreet+Christmas+Ornament+Cookie+Tutorial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QqLjjJYFiSA/Up7WbcvY6tI/AAAAAAAAD8U/0cTrlZe0MGw/s640/KlickitatStreet+Christmas+Ornament+Cookie+Tutorial.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
The decorating of these cookies is actually pretty simple. I worked in sections letting one color dry for a few minutes before I added the one next to it. Once the base was dry I topped them off with lots of dots and swirls and a sprinkle of sugar for sparkle. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mi1WEw6edNg/Up7Wdxsp0gI/AAAAAAAAD8o/XsqCsbe0A5E/s1600/KlickitatStreet+decorating+Christmas+Ornament+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="326" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mi1WEw6edNg/Up7Wdxsp0gI/AAAAAAAAD8o/XsqCsbe0A5E/s640/KlickitatStreet+decorating+Christmas+Ornament+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
No matter how complicated a cookie might look the techniques are the same. You can see here the details really make the cookies because before adding the dots the cookies are pretty dull. Don't stress over making things "perfect". If you look closely you'll see my dots aren't identical and things aren't perfectly straight and even. It doesn't matter because they still look good and they are just cookies after all!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HGO04p444aw/Up7WbpKlu7I/AAAAAAAAD8c/OlAcGlNdhQ8/s1600/KlickitatStreet+Retro+Chrismtas+Ornaments.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="520" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HGO04p444aw/Up7WbpKlu7I/AAAAAAAAD8c/OlAcGlNdhQ8/s640/KlickitatStreet+Retro+Chrismtas+Ornaments.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1fzEqDirw-Y/UosRqo_3cdI/AAAAAAAAD8A/MWkw_WJRaf0/s1600/KlickitatStreet+textured+owl+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="528" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1fzEqDirw-Y/UosRqo_3cdI/AAAAAAAAD8A/MWkw_WJRaf0/s640/KlickitatStreet+textured+owl+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
There is just something about owl cookies that make me happy. And for some reason every time I think of making owls I think they should be textured and patterned to the nines. I've made <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2012/10/patterned-owl-cookies.html" target="_blank">patterned owl cookies</a> before using royal icing and a lot of piping but this time around I dressed them up with textured fondant. I am certainly no expert in working with fondant but it's fairly easy when you only have to cover a cookie. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HwKFEFeLz5U/UosRo6meA_I/AAAAAAAAD74/9LUyUaBCswY/s1600/KlickitatStreet+textured+owl+cookies+supplies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="468" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HwKFEFeLz5U/UosRo6meA_I/AAAAAAAAD74/9LUyUaBCswY/s640/KlickitatStreet+textured+owl+cookies+supplies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
To make these textured owl cookies you will need:<br />
<ul>
<li>an owl cookie cutter. I used my own <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/164635147/handmade-chubby-owl-cookie-cutter?ref=shop_home_active" target="_blank">chubby owl cutter</a> that I designed and it's for sale in my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/KlickitatStreet" target="_blank">Etsy store.</a></li>
<li>a few cookie cutters in basic shapes to cut a belly and eyes</li>
<li>tinted fondant or modeling chocolate</li>
<li>texture mats, stencils, or other patterned objects</li>
<li>a small rolling pin and a craft knife</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CL6a-brbwms/UosRY8L4lSI/AAAAAAAAD7I/ih9cBGD8ADo/s1600/KlickitatStreet+fondant+texture+tools.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="492" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CL6a-brbwms/UosRY8L4lSI/AAAAAAAAD7I/ih9cBGD8ADo/s640/KlickitatStreet+fondant+texture+tools.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You can use just about anything to texture fondant. So much so that avoiding impressions in the fondant is usually the hard part of working with it. The plastic mat pictured is just some random vinyl I happened to have but it creates nice lines. Anything that has a texture will work so get creative! Be sure to run it through the dishwasher and it will be fine for incidental food contact.<br />
Obviously, fondant texture plates are made for this but you can also use stencils to give a light texture to fondant. Stencils are a hot item in the cookie world right now and there are so many amazing designs to choose from. Try <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SalsaSweets" target="_blank">Salsa Sweets</a>, <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheCookieCountess" target="_blank">The Cookie Countess</a> or <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/ArtfullyDesignedCo" target="_blank">Artfully Designed</a> for some fabulous finds!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LC0wiPBY6QU/UosRnoNnBiI/AAAAAAAAD7w/yhXVs0x-70g/s1600/KlickitatStreet+texture+fondant+with+stencil.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="316" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LC0wiPBY6QU/UosRnoNnBiI/AAAAAAAAD7w/yhXVs0x-70g/s640/KlickitatStreet+texture+fondant+with+stencil.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It is super easy to use stencils to texture fondant. Especially when you only need to work with small pieces for cookies. Start by rolling out the fondant a little thicker than you want it to be on the cookie. <br />
<ol>
<li>Lay your clean stencil on the fondant and gently roll the stencil into the fondant with a small rolling pin. You don't want to go too fast or use too much pressure because the stencil might lift up and could get damaged. </li>
<li>If you like you can add extra color, sparkle or dimension by dusting the fondant with petal dust and a brush. Since the stencil is secured to the fondant only the cut outs will be colored. </li>
<li>Gently peel the stencil away and the fondant will have a light texture. </li>
</ol>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OTYDudMuQWU/UosRdJ26NUI/AAAAAAAAD7Y/PCJUSsLImd0/s1600/KlickitatStreet+shimmer+fondant+texture.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="422" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OTYDudMuQWU/UosRdJ26NUI/AAAAAAAAD7Y/PCJUSsLImd0/s640/KlickitatStreet+shimmer+fondant+texture.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You can really see the effect of a light shimmer dust on the dark fondant. This is a really easy technique but it looks so good!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lBkonKUpfbg/UosRcFBxJnI/AAAAAAAAD7Q/trGrdgx-cjw/s1600/KlickitatStreet+cutting+owls.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="566" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lBkonKUpfbg/UosRcFBxJnI/AAAAAAAAD7Q/trGrdgx-cjw/s640/KlickitatStreet+cutting+owls.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
After you texture the fondant you are ready to decorate the owl. <br />
<ol>
<li>Cut the owl shape with your cookie cutter</li>
<li>Cut the belly shape with a small egg or circle cookie cutter and cut a place for the eyes with a heart. </li>
<li>Gently remove the excess fondant and "glue" the belly to the cookie with simple syrup. Be sure to save the wings for a different cookie. </li>
<li>Repeat these steps with a contrasting color of fondant to make the wings and attach them to the cookie as well.</li>
</ol>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ricAjm8r3MM/UosRePptVTI/AAAAAAAAD7g/18MPeSP1VlU/s1600/KlickitatStreet+fondant+owl+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="414" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ricAjm8r3MM/UosRePptVTI/AAAAAAAAD7g/18MPeSP1VlU/s640/KlickitatStreet+fondant+owl+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
To finish up the owls cut eyes from white fondant using the small heart cutter and trim them with a circle. Cut pupils for the eyes from dark fondant with a decorating tip. Roll a short fondant rope and attach to the top of the head for the tufted "horn" feathers. I used these teeny-tiny cutters to make the feet and beak but if you don't have them you could just cut little "sausage" shapes from an orange fondant rope instead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8hwu7_E4Xk0/UosRkl_I_AI/AAAAAAAAD7o/HxoPZqgY00s/s1600/KlickitatStreet+textured+owl+cookies+platter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="236" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8hwu7_E4Xk0/UosRkl_I_AI/AAAAAAAAD7o/HxoPZqgY00s/s640/KlickitatStreet+textured+owl+cookies+platter.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
That's all there is too it. I love seeing these little guys all line up like this and I hope you enjoy them too! <br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QKdlgg0XWq4/UoSF07cdV_I/AAAAAAAAD6A/DuB1c5R0L-E/s1600/KlickitatStreet+plaque+cookie+cutters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="588" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QKdlgg0XWq4/UoSF07cdV_I/AAAAAAAAD6A/DuB1c5R0L-E/s640/KlickitatStreet+plaque+cookie+cutters.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Today I have my latest cookie cutter designs to share with you in my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/KlickitatStreet" target="_blank">Etsy shop</a>! Last year I <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2012/11/not-so-fancy-plaque-cutters.html" target="_blank">wrote a post</a> lamenting how I didn't own any pretty plaque cutters so this year I made myself a couple and I made a lot for you! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-b_kjbTJ-K5w/UoSIO2q7PFI/AAAAAAAAD6Y/JbBYaHXe7fk/s1600/KS05+flower+plaque.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-b_kjbTJ-K5w/UoSIO2q7PFI/AAAAAAAAD6Y/JbBYaHXe7fk/s640/KS05+flower+plaque.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
My first plaque cutter is this <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/169213809/large-flower-plaque-cookie-cutter-ks05?" target="_blank">flower plaque</a>! I like the idea of adding embellishments to plaque cookies but sometimes piecing shapes together gets tedious especially if you are trying to combine multiple shapes. So I designed this cutter with little flowers already attached. At 5 inches wide this large plaque is perfect for making a bold statement in a cookie platter. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_1eWGCtfZVM/UoSF0oardVI/AAAAAAAAD58/6lHUhqM2tn4/s1600/KlickitatStreet+plaque+pine+cones.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="342" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_1eWGCtfZVM/UoSF0oardVI/AAAAAAAAD58/6lHUhqM2tn4/s640/KlickitatStreet+plaque+pine+cones.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Of course the flower area isn't limited to flowers. It would work just as well with snowflakes, leaves, bows or other shapes like these pine boughs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-67k4YNua0NE/UoSIRp-8Q-I/AAAAAAAAD6o/vyLtsO8Grhs/s1600/removeflowers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-67k4YNua0NE/UoSIRp-8Q-I/AAAAAAAAD6o/vyLtsO8Grhs/s640/removeflowers.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
If you don't want every cookie to have flowers then it is super easy to use this cutter as a more general plaque. After cutting the shape simply rotate the cutter and line it up to cut the flowers off cleanly. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QxoGZ7T4_j8/UoSIWZ3JR6I/AAAAAAAAD6w/6gVig4QuYVo/s1600/KS06+plaque+no2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QxoGZ7T4_j8/UoSIWZ3JR6I/AAAAAAAAD6w/6gVig4QuYVo/s640/KS06+plaque+no2.jpg" width="616" /></a></div>
<br />
Next is a slightly <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/169214435/handmade-anna-plaque-cookie-cutter-ks06?ref=pr_shop" target="_blank">smaller plaque cutter</a>. This plaque is a little narrower than the first, but they are both the same height so they go well together. I wanted this plaque to be a little whimsical but also sophisticated. I've name this the "Anna" plaque because I have to call it something but I also think it looks like a doll head! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LRRy67v-tNQ/UoSIPD01UXI/AAAAAAAAD6c/zyBngt41efk/s1600/KS06+plaque+no2+-+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="294" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LRRy67v-tNQ/UoSIPD01UXI/AAAAAAAAD6c/zyBngt41efk/s640/KS06+plaque+no2+-+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Those bumps are just right for some small bows!<br />
<br /> I've also added some large <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/KlickitatStreet?section_id=14531576" target="_blank">gift tag cookie cutters</a> to the shop. These cutters are "full size" gift tags at 4 inches tall but can also be rotated and trimmed to make smaller tags as well. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mIzNjXL_HbA/UoSJeL4osXI/AAAAAAAAD64/TK1_I00-fT0/s1600/KlickitatStreet+gift+tag+cookie+cutters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mIzNjXL_HbA/UoSJeL4osXI/AAAAAAAAD64/TK1_I00-fT0/s640/KlickitatStreet+gift+tag+cookie+cutters.jpg" width="584" /></a></div>
<br />
I want to give a huge thank you to everyone who supported my last set of <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2013/10/a-gnome-for-all-seasons-klickitat.html" target="_blank">gnome cookie cutters</a>! I love seeing what you are making with them. <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZGtQVhQo7hg/UmDTKw_dnhI/AAAAAAAAD38/0_FijS8LXEA/s1600/KlickitatStreet+skull+cookie+tutorial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="418" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZGtQVhQo7hg/UmDTKw_dnhI/AAAAAAAAD38/0_FijS8LXEA/s640/KlickitatStreet+skull+cookie+tutorial.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
When it comes to Halloween things I usually choose cute over gross or scary so I'm not really sure how these cookies came about. I saw cupcake sets <a href="http://shop.boingboing.net/product/Nomskulls-Skull-Cupcake-Mold" target="_blank">like these</a> in stores and was inspired to cookie-fy them. By the time I finished with the details they were looking really icky but I'm loving them! The taste is great too once you work up the nerve to eat the squishy fondant brain. <br />
<br />
To decorate the cookies you will need;<br />
<ul>
<li>chocolate skull cookies - I used LilaLoa's <a href="http://www.lilaloa.com/2011/03/end-all-for-chocolate-cookies-recipe.html" target="_blank">End-All Chocolate Cookie Recipe</a> </li>
<li>white royal icing in piping and flood consistencies</li>
<li>marshmallow fondant tinted a greyish pink </li>
<li>red piping gel and candy eyeballs (both are optional but look pretty cool)</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pcMqTEzGbWM/UmDS9xAlrVI/AAAAAAAAD3s/NAFaJ-zzg3U/s1600/KlickitatStreet+piping+filling+skull+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="282" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pcMqTEzGbWM/UmDS9xAlrVI/AAAAAAAAD3s/NAFaJ-zzg3U/s640/KlickitatStreet+piping+filling+skull+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<ol>
<li>Start by outlining the skull and eye sockets in white piping icing. </li>
<li>Pipe some squarish dots for teeth</li>
<li>Wait a minute or two for the first teeth to crust over and then add the rest of the teeth. Ordinarily I might worry about icing craters forming in the teeth but this is one time when they can really boost the design so don't stress them!</li>
<li>Allow the outlines and teeth to dry for a few minutes and then fill in the skull with white flood icing. Let the skulls dry for several hours. </li>
</ol>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e5r6E1SZ4oU/UmDTIpk0JmI/AAAAAAAAD30/HTTcDG6135E/s1600/KlickitatStreet+fondant+brains.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="502" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e5r6E1SZ4oU/UmDTIpk0JmI/AAAAAAAAD30/HTTcDG6135E/s640/KlickitatStreet+fondant+brains.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<ol>
<li>Once the skull has dried roll a small amount of greyish pink marshmallow fondant into a thin rope.(you can also work on the brains while the icing is drying if you like) </li>
<li>Loop the fondant rope back and forth to make the brain. I found it looked more "brainy" if I started at the center and then zig-zagged my way up to the top of the skull and then back down. If the rope gets too thin or is too short tuck in the end piece and start a new rope. </li>
<li>The fondant won't stick to the cookie until you "glue" it in place so you can play with the shape if you need to. Once you have the fondant shaped like you want gently flatten one side to be the brain's mid line. </li>
<li>Glue the fondant to the cookie by brushing a little simple syrup on the cookie and the fondant. (Simple syrup is made from equal parts sugar and warm water.)</li>
<li>Repeat steps 1-4 to make the other side of the brain and pipe the nasal bone in white icing. </li>
</ol>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PP3wjuFs6Fk/UmDTMFgsvxI/AAAAAAAAD4E/vpqdB5TT-FA/s1600/KlickitatStreet+skull+brain+cookie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="506" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PP3wjuFs6Fk/UmDTMFgsvxI/AAAAAAAAD4E/vpqdB5TT-FA/s640/KlickitatStreet+skull+brain+cookie.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Now you could be done at that point but to really increase the "ick" factor brush some red piping gel on the fondant brain to give it a slimy look. I used <a href="http://cakecentral.com/a/piping-gel-that-works" target="_blank">this recipe</a> for the piping gel but I replaced the lemon juice with water because I guess I had to draw the line at brains with lemony zest. <br />
I also used a little brown food coloring and vodka to bring out the texture of the teeth and give an aged look to the skull. Royal icing transfer eyes give the skulls some character and a little cuteness. All of these details are optional but I think they really up the wow factor of the cookies!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Fbwqy6XlaMQ/UmDTvOgg6cI/AAAAAAAAD4M/ddyiqLbq9F8/s1600/KlickitatStreet+skull+cookies+platter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="436" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Fbwqy6XlaMQ/UmDTvOgg6cI/AAAAAAAAD4M/ddyiqLbq9F8/s640/KlickitatStreet+skull+cookies+platter.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Okay, so seeing them all together they are pretty gross looking but they are fun and tasty and isn't that the point of Halloween anyway? <br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KDiYi18gu5M/UlZOD0Sw0fI/AAAAAAAAD0w/A_ouKFjuyAw/s1600/adj-5725b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="416" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KDiYi18gu5M/UlZOD0Sw0fI/AAAAAAAAD0w/A_ouKFjuyAw/s640/adj-5725b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I have to admit that I am not a very big fan of hand cutting cookies. I don't seem to have the knack for it so if I can get a cookie cutter to do the job than I'm that much happier. All of these faces started with just one cookie cutter and then I used a cutter here and a cutter there to create a myriad of fun party hats and hairstyles. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NGMqHYN8SJo/UlZShih7-mI/AAAAAAAAD08/aTd0ADqB-0M/s1600/KlickitatStreet+gnomes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="586" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NGMqHYN8SJo/UlZShih7-mI/AAAAAAAAD08/aTd0ADqB-0M/s640/KlickitatStreet+gnomes.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
These little guys were made with a <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/162436858/handmade-boy-gnome-cookie-cutter?ref=shop_home_active" target="_blank">gnome</a><a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/162436858/handmade-boy-gnome-cookie-cutter?ref=shop_home_active" target="_blank"> cookie cutter</a> I designed. I gave him this large hat so it could be cut in many different ways to make different characters. If you don't have this cutter that's okay because you can use these same ideas to cut lots of faces from cupcake and ice cream cookie cutters too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-z93nFj3V9ko/UleX45WTEzI/AAAAAAAAD14/p5EddM8Dqs8/s1600/KlickitatStreet+gnome+witch+hat+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="582" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-z93nFj3V9ko/UleX45WTEzI/AAAAAAAAD14/p5EddM8Dqs8/s640/KlickitatStreet+gnome+witch+hat+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
One easy way to make different hats is to gently curl the dough before
it's baked. Once you've transferred the cut cookie to the baking sheet
carefully lift the point of the hat and curl it to one side. If the
dough is too cold or too dry it may crack but that's easily fixed by
patting the edge with your finger. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ob3X1cufogU/UlZNqR2pQHI/AAAAAAAAD0A/yrz6C6EMb3c/s1600/KlickitatStreet+cutting+face+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="304" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ob3X1cufogU/UlZNqR2pQHI/AAAAAAAAD0A/yrz6C6EMb3c/s640/KlickitatStreet+cutting+face+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
A moon cutter is good for easily cutting a nice smooth round. If you tried to cut this with a full circle you would end up cutting off the sides of the cookie as well but the half circle easily removes just the square without messing up the rest. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fCNEDZWQKR8/UleX3nwiNfI/AAAAAAAAD1w/isvjhUFzRpQ/s1600/KlickitatStreet+hair+bow+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="408" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fCNEDZWQKR8/UleX3nwiNfI/AAAAAAAAD1w/isvjhUFzRpQ/s640/KlickitatStreet+hair+bow+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
There are many other common cutters that can be used to cut away the
shape in interesting ways. A holly cookie cutter is a must have for
this kind of cutting. I particularly like the holly cutters because
they have a variety of half circles and you can make many different
cuts like I did with these <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2013/04/easy-painted-flower-cookies.html" target="_blank">easy painted flower cookies</a>.
Bat cutters are also great because of all the little points and
curves. I used them to cut a hair bow but it could also be cat ears or
lil' devil horns too.<br />
<br />
Now I'll admit I own a lot of cookie cutters and still every season I have to check the new ones in the stores. Plus I pick up so many of them at garage sales and thrift stores just to get that ONE in the bag I really want. If you're anything like me you have a lot of duplicate cutters and I have a great tip for how you can put them to use! <br />
You'll need a <a href="http://www.harborfreight.com/5-in-1-hobby-woodburner-38593.html" target="_blank">heat tool</a> for this and some spare plastic cookie cutters. The tool should come with a thin craft blade. Let it heat up and you can cut right through your plastic cookie cutters like butter!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FbDlohJJUPQ/UlZNrq2LSfI/AAAAAAAAD0I/cyv4Wrz1qSY/s1600/KlickitatStreet+cutting+cookie+cutters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="516" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FbDlohJJUPQ/UlZNrq2LSfI/AAAAAAAAD0I/cyv4Wrz1qSY/s640/KlickitatStreet+cutting+cookie+cutters.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Please be careful when using the hobby tool. Not only does the tip get burning hot (obviously) but so does the stand and the cuff where the tool rests. It's really easy to forget and burn your forearm when reaching across the tool or touch the stand after you pick up the tool. Melted plastic also smells awful so be sure to use good ventilation.<br />
If you don't have a good moon cutter for cutting a nice round head then cut a spare circle cutter into pieces. You can get a couple different curves from the same circle depending on how you chop it up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8iPsdgUU9F4/UleXu37t8dI/AAAAAAAAD1g/qs2L5irVeH8/s1600/KlickitatStreet+bald+head+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8iPsdgUU9F4/UleXu37t8dI/AAAAAAAAD1g/qs2L5irVeH8/s640/KlickitatStreet+bald+head+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I should warn you that once you start looking for useful pieces you can cut off of extra
cookie cutters you might get carried away. The top of this bell cutter makes a great stocking cap. That little nub would be a pain to hand cut but it's a breeze with this little shape.<br />

I got double duty out of this spare tulip because both ends are interesting.<br />

<br />
This set of circles from Walmart would be a great one to cut into pieces because not only are they cheap but one side is scalloped so you can cut a curly head easily!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Sj6JO53LxY8/UleXuaN1GRI/AAAAAAAAD1U/yjNCERqekh0/s1600/KlickitatStreet+curly+haired+kids+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Sj6JO53LxY8/UleXuaN1GRI/AAAAAAAAD1U/yjNCERqekh0/s640/KlickitatStreet+curly+haired+kids+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Once you get going with these little guys the possibilities are endless. Go dig through your spare cutters and I'll bet you'll find all kinds of cuties looking to get out!<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QiosuSeWyAw/Uk27C-re6WI/AAAAAAAADyM/cMY0E2y5iW0/s1600/KlickitatStreet+gnome+blog+post.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QiosuSeWyAw/Uk27C-re6WI/AAAAAAAADyM/cMY0E2y5iW0/s640/KlickitatStreet+gnome+blog+post.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
So today I have a pretty big announcement for my humble little cookie blog. I am excited (and quite terrified) to tell you that I have started making my own line of cookie cutters. I've opened a little <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/KlickitatStreet" target="_blank">Etsy shop</a> to sell them and here is my first set:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BHfgxtOZXT4/Uk27BtB9ixI/AAAAAAAADyE/6lhbz3_qTGg/s1600/KlickitatStreet+woodland+cookie+cutters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BHfgxtOZXT4/Uk27BtB9ixI/AAAAAAAADyE/6lhbz3_qTGg/s640/KlickitatStreet+woodland+cookie+cutters.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
All the cutters are handmade by me in my home studio. They are stainless steel so they shouldn't tarnish or rust. I can make them pretty quickly but still these are "limited edition" in the sense that I can only make so many at a time. Hopefully these little fellows represent just the beginning of my line and there will be many fun things to come. <br />
<br />
Anyhoo, let me show you the cutters;<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2brzavBT6W8/Uk27dUhJnBI/AAAAAAAADyY/0IW3pKu3WyI/s1600/KS01+gnome+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="612" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2brzavBT6W8/Uk27dUhJnBI/AAAAAAAADyY/0IW3pKu3WyI/s640/KS01+gnome+1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This jaunty <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/162436858/handmade-boy-gnome-cookie-cutter?ref=shop_home_active" target="_blank">boy gnome</a> is 5.5 inches tall, and while that may be a tad big I designed him especially to have this big ol' hat so you could easily adapt him into lots of other characters.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Qj3HFCBpsPc/Uk27dAcEBXI/AAAAAAAADyU/5VenCb_xr1k/s1600/KS02+gnome+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="384" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Qj3HFCBpsPc/Uk27dAcEBXI/AAAAAAAADyU/5VenCb_xr1k/s640/KS02+gnome+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
If you gently curl the unbaked dough you can give him a totally different look. Or trim the hat off entirely.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jWyZz2m97Y0/Uk27yNyZ8YI/AAAAAAAADys/UzLFrp-OgOk/s1600/KS02+girl+gnome+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jWyZz2m97Y0/Uk27yNyZ8YI/AAAAAAAADys/UzLFrp-OgOk/s640/KS02+girl+gnome+1.jpg" width="624" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's the <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/164622942/handmade-girl-gnome-cookie-cutter?ref=shop_home_active" target="_blank">lady gnome cookie cutte</a>r to match. She's the same size and width of course so they can go together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--eUpIngIXCM/Uk3Cs5IgFZI/AAAAAAAADzw/S8mbfhJ6hoY/s1600/KS02+girl+gnome+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="526" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--eUpIngIXCM/Uk3Cs5IgFZI/AAAAAAAADzw/S8mbfhJ6hoY/s640/KS02+girl+gnome+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1o62AHigkoE/Uk27xojSCkI/AAAAAAAADyk/Xr4i1FuaxYg/s1600/KS02+girl+gnome+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
Sometimes girl gnomes have a little smaller cap then the boy and that's easy to do if you just trim the shape a bit. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tdCFP3e_CJc/Uk2_LYaCIAI/AAAAAAAADzk/jXNIomrvjf4/s1600/KlickitatStreet+gnome+cookie+cutters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="492" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tdCFP3e_CJc/Uk2_LYaCIAI/AAAAAAAADzk/jXNIomrvjf4/s640/KlickitatStreet+gnome+cookie+cutters.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You can get so many fun little guys out of these cutters. When I was designing them I wanted a cutter that could easily work for all the fall holidays. To push your creativity don't think of one just as a "boy" and the other as a "girl". The short coat on the boy gnome is also a little girl's dress. The long dress on the girl can be a cloak or a coat for wizards and clowns!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AIAdvoYj-fM/Uk29lBvW1kI/AAAAAAAADzQ/3eA-N9xL0sA/s1600/KlickitatStreet+chubby+owl+cookie+cutter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="317" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AIAdvoYj-fM/Uk29lBvW1kI/AAAAAAAADzQ/3eA-N9xL0sA/s640/KlickitatStreet+chubby+owl+cookie+cutter.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I've also made a fun <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/164635147/handmade-chubby-owl-cookie-cutter?ref=shop_home_active" target="_blank">chubby owl cutter</a>. After you cut the dough if you rotate the cutter and cut again you can make a cute little plaque. (For more information on cutting plaques, <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2012/11/not-so-fancy-plaque-cutters.html" target="_blank">visit this post</a>)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ue8xCgdcQOI/Uk2-4_ID8AI/AAAAAAAADzc/23r9i1Fa9D0/s1600/KlickitatStreet+mushroom+cookie+cutter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="274" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ue8xCgdcQOI/Uk2-4_ID8AI/AAAAAAAADzc/23r9i1Fa9D0/s640/KlickitatStreet+mushroom+cookie+cutter.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And a <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/164637121/handmade-mushroomtoadstool-cookie-cutter?ref=shop_home_active" target="_blank">mushroom cutter</a> to round out a woodland cookie platter! To say this is all a huge learning curve for me would be a massive understatement. I hapily welcome any feedback you can give me! I will be posting tutorials for using the cutters over the next week as well as a really good way of easily cutting a whole bunch of different hats so stay tuned! <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WQuiBPQjcVQ/Uigit8NvTNI/AAAAAAAADxw/tvof1ZGn6D0/s1600/KlickitatStreet+monster+cookies+tutorial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="596" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WQuiBPQjcVQ/Uigit8NvTNI/AAAAAAAADxw/tvof1ZGn6D0/s640/KlickitatStreet+monster+cookies+tutorial.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
With the Monsters University movie released this summer and Halloween not too far away, monster stuff is all the rage these days. It's pretty much impossible to mess up a monster cookie and you can make an infinite number of unique monsters just by joining common cookie cutters together!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-soX1wOBI9Cc/UigitVqmZaI/AAAAAAAADxk/pjBdHyrJmZw/s1600/KlickitatStreet+monster+face+body+cookie+cutters+b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="416" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-soX1wOBI9Cc/UigitVqmZaI/AAAAAAAADxk/pjBdHyrJmZw/s640/KlickitatStreet+monster+face+body+cookie+cutters+b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Just about any common cookie cutter can become a weird monster face or body. This is a great use for those big tubs that have 100+ cutters in them. Look for large general shapes with just a couple small details for faces and bodies. Also, try turning the cutters upside down or picturing them with just a little bit of trimming to see even more possibilities.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Qwju7ZMekm8/UigitZQew6I/AAAAAAAADxg/bLh58Iwd--c/s1600/KlickitatStreet+monster+feet+tails+cookie+cutters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Qwju7ZMekm8/UigitZQew6I/AAAAAAAADxg/bLh58Iwd--c/s640/KlickitatStreet+monster+feet+tails+cookie+cutters.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Your monster will need feet of course and maybe a tail too. Lots of cutters have a couple bumps on one side that look like feet or mutliple bumps for the many-legged variety of monster. You'll probably have to trim most of the shape away to use just the "feet" but that's easy enough. Look for cutters that have hooks and bumps and points to use as tails.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iMIxwLQZ0DE/UigihS0Zj9I/AAAAAAAADw4/Gq5OXK1m6xE/s1600/KlickitatStreet+blue+monster+cookie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="198" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iMIxwLQZ0DE/UigihS0Zj9I/AAAAAAAADw4/Gq5OXK1m6xE/s640/KlickitatStreet+blue+monster+cookie.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
To get started choose anything you like for a body. Pick a cutter for a tail or some feet or both. A small moon cutter makes great horns. Halloween bat cutters can be used to add wings too. Use the body cutter to trim the other shapes and then piece them all together for baking. If piecing cookie shapes together is new to you I have a post all about that here: <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2013/07/how-to-combine-cookie-cutters.html" target="_blank">How to Combine Cookie Cutters</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8Z75wFkuST8/UiginlnayJI/AAAAAAAADxU/6iCEANGv9SU/s1600/KlickitatStreet+monster+cookies+pieced.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="470" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8Z75wFkuST8/UiginlnayJI/AAAAAAAADxU/6iCEANGv9SU/s640/KlickitatStreet+monster+cookies+pieced.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
There is no right or wrong with these so don't worry about them being "perfect". Monsters are all kinds of strange and unusual so just have fun with them. I made these cookies for a very special one-year birthday party so I also added the tails and horns and things to some birthday shapes like cakes and presents as if they were being carried off by the monsters.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gFsHRph2w2A/Uigij-iQ-dI/AAAAAAAADxA/N8EU1ULK_rE/s1600/KlickitatStreet+monster+cookies+base+coat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="432" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gFsHRph2w2A/Uigij-iQ-dI/AAAAAAAADxA/N8EU1ULK_rE/s640/KlickitatStreet+monster+cookies+base+coat.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
To decorate the cookies I started with just a simple base coat of royal icing. I know I'm going to go crazy with the details later so I'm not worried about piping and filling every little part separately. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bjt6aYAmL-0/UiginuRQ4LI/AAAAAAAADxQ/ELH45uFC9LE/s1600/KlickitatStreet+monster+cookies+details.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="502" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bjt6aYAmL-0/UiginuRQ4LI/AAAAAAAADxQ/ELH45uFC9LE/s640/KlickitatStreet+monster+cookies+details.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It's the piping stage of decorating where all the fun happens and this is when the monsters come alive. There are only about 4 colors in the monsters but mixing them all up adds a lot of interest and outlining them in a different color from the base gives them a lot of punch. Be sure to include fun details like stripes and toes and lots of googly eyes of course. If you find yourself not quite sure what to do with a given cookie then cover it with dots! (works every time)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SSwBrAppHQQ/UigimoY1IsI/AAAAAAAADxI/k1Sigou56ds/s1600/KlickitatStreet+monster+cookie+platter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SSwBrAppHQQ/UigimoY1IsI/AAAAAAAADxI/k1Sigou56ds/s640/KlickitatStreet+monster+cookie+platter.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Someday I may learn to do 3 designs 5 times instead of 15 designs once, but these are just so much fun I can't resist. There is an endless supply of creatures waiting in your cutter tub!<br />
<br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s4_t8V8_lyE/Ug3DtSZ_GjI/AAAAAAAADt0/KAsgoM1EBR0/s1600/KlickitatStreet+flipflop+and+barefeet+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="557" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s4_t8V8_lyE/Ug3DtSZ_GjI/AAAAAAAADt0/KAsgoM1EBR0/s640/KlickitatStreet+flipflop+and+barefeet+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It's funny how even though I am many summer's past my school days I still think of summer as vacation time and I never manage to get much of anything done. So when our annual family reunion came around last week I needed cookies that were easy-breezy and these summer flip flops were just the ticket! <br />
<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IW0g2EMjHD4/Ug3Dtm6F_tI/AAAAAAAADt4/eifQT2l0r9s/s1600/KlickitatStreet+flipflop+foot+cookie+cutters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IW0g2EMjHD4/Ug3Dtm6F_tI/AAAAAAAADt4/eifQT2l0r9s/s640/KlickitatStreet+flipflop+foot+cookie+cutters.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
In planning this set of cookies I only hit one snag. This is the flip flop cutter I have along with a foot cutter. I'll admit that it drives me a little crazy that they don't match. This foot just would not wear this shoe and while I am certianly not the expert on putting a cookie platter together I think the size and scale of cookies in a set should match if possible. <br />
So I decided I had to have a different flip flop and the only way to get one that would match the foot would be to make one. It is basically just an oval after all so how hard could that be? I followed LilaLoa's <a href="http://www.lilaloa.com/2012/03/show-me-your-cookie-cutters.html" target="_blank">tutorial to make a cookie cutter</a> except instead of using sheet metal from the hardware store I cut up a cheap cookie sheet from the dollar store. Then I used the foot cookie cutter as a form to wrap and bend the metal strip and now I have a flip flop just the right size for the foot! <br />

<br />
The actual decorating of the feet and flip flops was super easy so this tutorial is pretty short;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m08foXPo2zU/Ug3DjAJML6I/AAAAAAAADtg/nJak3MUbUMU/s1600/KlickitatStreet+barefoot+cookie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m08foXPo2zU/Ug3DjAJML6I/AAAAAAAADtg/nJak3MUbUMU/s640/KlickitatStreet+barefoot+cookie.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For the feet cookies outline and flood the cookie in flesh colored royal icing and let dry for several hours. When the icing has set up add painted toenails in a thicker flood icing and outline toes and you're done!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yFkae4Ux-bM/Ug3DkJ1x5mI/AAAAAAAADto/UgEYv_j_z18/s1600/KlickitatStreet+decorating+flipflop+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yFkae4Ux-bM/Ug3DkJ1x5mI/AAAAAAAADto/UgEYv_j_z18/s640/KlickitatStreet+decorating+flipflop+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The flip flops are pretty much done the same way as the feet. Outline and flood the flip flop in the color of your choice and let the icing dry for several hours. When the icing has set up add details like stripes or dots and after they've dried a little while finish off the cookie with a thong in thicker flood icing. You could also add the details right into the wet base if you like. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YKdgpkBGbqw/Ug3E8gADFmI/AAAAAAAADuU/jKt58Cw-zMU/s1600/KlickitatStreet+flipflop+cookie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="466" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YKdgpkBGbqw/Ug3E8gADFmI/AAAAAAAADuU/jKt58Cw-zMU/s640/KlickitatStreet+flipflop+cookie.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I added a teeny tiny flower cookie as a decoration to the flip flop but you could use fondant or royal icing transfers or they are cute just as they are!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zz2D9XQo1vI/UbGD4Lhe-HI/AAAAAAAADpU/h6ktGiEXLdY/s1600/KlickitatStreet+combining+cookie+cutters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="tutorial on combining cookie cutters" border="0" height="432" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zz2D9XQo1vI/UbGD4Lhe-HI/AAAAAAAADpU/h6ktGiEXLdY/s640/KlickitatStreet+combining+cookie+cutters.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
One of the easiest ways to add interest to your cookies is to combine cookie cutters together. Stock cutters can become a little boring and you may not be able to find the exact shape you are looking for. With a little creativity you can create just about any shape you could need from cutters you already have. Plus it's super easy too! I made these pretty flower cookies by first <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2013/05/coloring-dough-for-easy-cookies.html" target="_blank">coloring the dough</a> and then piecing simple flower and leaf shapes together. <br />
<br />
<b>Combining Two Cookie Cutters: </b><br />
<b> </b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vLilDCzfVwg/UbGD7NNprGI/AAAAAAAADpc/OMETbPKxTrc/s1600/KlickitatStreet+piecing+cookie+shapes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="tutorial for combining two cookie cutters" border="0" height="564" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vLilDCzfVwg/UbGD7NNprGI/AAAAAAAADpc/OMETbPKxTrc/s640/KlickitatStreet+piecing+cookie+shapes.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b> </b>The simplest way to make a new cookie shape is by combining two cookie cutters. <br />
<ol>
<li>Start by cutting both cookie shapes from your cookie dough.</li>
<li>Use one of the cutters to trim away a piece of the other shape. </li>
<li>Remove the excess dough. </li>
<li>Attach the two shapes together on the cookie sheet for baking. When the cookies are baked and cooled the seam will be strong enough to hold the shapes together without breaking. </li>
</ol>
<ol></ol>
<b>Combining Multiple Cutters:</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VIv_RZiwWvg/UbGD14Kqw1I/AAAAAAAADpI/gQ9GbzmcJEM/s1600/KlickitatStreet+combining+multiple+cookie+cutters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="tutorial on Combining Multiple Cookie Cutters" border="0" height="242" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VIv_RZiwWvg/UbGD14Kqw1I/AAAAAAAADpI/gQ9GbzmcJEM/s640/KlickitatStreet+combining+multiple+cookie+cutters.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You can piece together as many cookie cutters as you like working one shape at a time: <br />
<ol>
<li>Cut and piece two leaves together on the cookie sheet.</li>
<li>Use the flower cookie cutter to cut the flower shape away from the pieced leaves.</li>
<li>Cut the flower shape and piece it together with the leaves for baking.</li>
</ol>
<ol>
</ol>
<b>Combining Cookie Cutters using a Template </b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cOvYg9m7_ag/UbGD2zN0mII/AAAAAAAADpE/OfnbtHjAuQo/s1600/KlickitatStreet+cutting+cookies+with+a+template.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="cookie tutorial using a template to join cookie cutters" border="0" height="464" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cOvYg9m7_ag/UbGD2zN0mII/AAAAAAAADpE/OfnbtHjAuQo/s640/KlickitatStreet+cutting+cookies+with+a+template.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Most of the time when I'm combining cutters I'm not too worried about the final shape being "perfect". There may be times though when you do want the shape to be exact and for those times it is useful to use a template for getting the cuts right:<br />
<ol>
<li>Draw around both cutters on a sheet of paper overlapping them like you will when cutting the cookies. </li>
<li>Trace a part of the drawing onto a piece of transparent template plastic and cut it out with scissors. </li>
<li>After cutting the first cookie shape lay the template on the cookie dough and use it as a guide for the second cookie cutter. </li>
<li>When you use the template as a guide all the cookies will be the same. </li>
</ol>
See how easy it is to make custom shapes from the cutters you already have? Here are a few more tips for piecing shapes together:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Whenever possible try to choose the cut that ends with the greatest surface area between the cookies. For example:</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9s66T-H4pNI/TyB4bkkmyvI/AAAAAAAAC9Q/xzMCSHaUzFk/s400/piecing.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="165" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9s66T-H4pNI/TyB4bkkmyvI/AAAAAAAAC9Q/xzMCSHaUzFk/s400/piecing.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<ul>
<li>I have only had pieced cookies break one time and that was when I had joined them at a very narrow spot. Try to avoid narrow areas and you shouldn't have to worry about breakage. </li>
<li>Try to move the cookies as little as possible when they are warm. If you have extra cookie sheets you can let the the cookie cool and decorate them all on one sheet but if you do need to move them just be careful. Always lift the cookies with a cookie spatula securely under the seam. </li>
</ul>
<ul>
</ul>

<br />
Can you believe the 4th of July is almost here?! Well I can't. If you happen to need some pinwheel cookie flair for the 4th then I've got you covered. These are the best kind of decorated cookies because they look complicated but they're totally easy. You can wow your friends at the BBQ!<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Cutting Pinwheel Cookies</b></span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kZMbMoc2bHQ/UcvnnZcIDXI/AAAAAAAADr0/xZeDuawbAEU/s1600/KlickitatStreet+cutting+pinwheel+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kZMbMoc2bHQ/UcvnnZcIDXI/AAAAAAAADr0/xZeDuawbAEU/s640/KlickitatStreet+cutting+pinwheel+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
A pinwheel isn't a common cookie cutter but that's okay because you don't really need one.<br />
<ul>
<li>Start by cutting a square. </li>
<li>Use a corner of the square cutter to clip a little triangle from the side of the dough.</li>
<li>Work around the square clipping a triangle from each side. </li>
</ul>
To get all those little triangle cuts straight and even it's soooo much easier if you use a template as a guide with the cutter. This approach is like a hybrid between hand cutting and cutting with a cookie cutter. You can size the pinwheel template to fit your square cookie cutter like I did or make pinwheels in a variety of sizes by cutting around the sides of the template with the square cutter as well as cutting out the points.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yDMIjaHTJvY/Ucvn5zQ8rMI/AAAAAAAADsc/k7AMaFSW7qM/s1600/KlickitatStreet+cookie+cutter+pinwheel+template.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="420" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yDMIjaHTJvY/Ucvn5zQ8rMI/AAAAAAAADsc/k7AMaFSW7qM/s640/KlickitatStreet+cookie+cutter+pinwheel+template.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You can size and print the template below onto cardstock and throw it away when you're done with your cookies or you can print and trace the template onto clear plastic from a deli container lid or a milk jug and use it again some time. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7aOn198N4HM/UcvntMAInkI/AAAAAAAADsM/IcNx_RElm24/s1600/pinwheel+cookie+template.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7aOn198N4HM/UcvntMAInkI/AAAAAAAADsM/IcNx_RElm24/s1600/pinwheel+cookie+template.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Decorating Pinwheel Cookies</b></span><br />
<br />
The "trickiest" part of decorating the pinwheel cookies is getting the first triangles in the right place and honestly it's not that tricky at all.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DZlslDY6hzg/Ucvnrg5ThoI/AAAAAAAADsI/vnnuwYEKvfo/s1600/KlickitatStreet+decorating+pinwheel+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DZlslDY6hzg/Ucvnrg5ThoI/AAAAAAAADsI/vnnuwYEKvfo/s640/KlickitatStreet+decorating+pinwheel+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<ol>
<li>Pipe a line down the center of the cookie from the edge of one triangle to the other. </li>
<li>Pipe the same line across the cookie horizontally.</li>
<li>Pipe a line from the point of one triangle down to the opposite point crossing at the center. Repeat from the other side. </li>
<li>Close off the little triangles. Don't worry too much about all the points matching up perfectly in the center of the cookie because you're going to cover them later anyway.</li>
<li>Flood fill the little triangles before the outline dries to help prevent cratering in the small areas. </li>
<li>If you like you can add details while the icing is wet. The wet lines will sink into the wet base and dry smoothly. (This is known as wet on wet technique) Personally, I like to wait until the base is dry before adding details but that's just me.</li>
</ol>
<ul>
</ul>
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Cctgzhg8a6k/UcvoGVsaJaI/AAAAAAAADso/nsgiKjwRpRw/s1600/KlickitatStreet+pinwheel+cookies+piping+details.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Cctgzhg8a6k/UcvoGVsaJaI/AAAAAAAADso/nsgiKjwRpRw/s640/KlickitatStreet+pinwheel+cookies+piping+details.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<ul>
<li>After the small triangles have dried for a few hours outline the large triangles.</li>
<li>Let the outline set up a minute or so and then flood fill the large triangles.</li>
<li>Let the icing dry for several hours and finish off with piping details. Don't forget to add a dot of icing in the center for the "pin" to complete the pinwheel. </li>
</ul>
You can get as fancy or stay as basic as you like with the piping details. They look great in simple solid colors or covered in dots and stripes. I probably got a little too crazy with the details but they look great anyway! For a cute spin on stars and stripes try tiny white flowers instead of stars and chevron stripes. Plus a little touch of yellow and aqua freshens up the traditional red white and blue while still remaining patriotic. <br />

Since cookies are a hobby for me and not a business I usually only make a design one time and then move on to something new but these Super Hero baby onesies are so easy and so cute I decided to make them again in honor of the new Superman movie coming Friday. (which of course I'm very excited to see!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YqBelY5mo2g/UbezwvXYr5I/AAAAAAAADqA/o-EIg5FAfiI/s1600/KlickitatStreet+SuperBaby+Cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YqBelY5mo2g/UbezwvXYr5I/AAAAAAAADqA/o-EIg5FAfiI/s640/KlickitatStreet+SuperBaby+Cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
For these cookies you will need a onesie cookie cutter (or a romper or bodysuit or whatever you call it) I used the onesie cutter from the <a href="http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?id=A07A1ABE-1E0B-C910-EA13F297270524A8&killnav=1" target="_blank">Wilton Baby Cookie Cutter set</a> which is available at all the big craft stores. This is a good set to have because both the onesie and the <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2012/11/coca-cola-polar-bear-cookie-tutorial.html" target="_blank">sitting bear</a> are on my list of favorite cookie cutters. <br />
You could certainly make these cookies by just decorating the onesie as it is but it's pretty easy to add a few cute pieces for a little Superhero flair!<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Part 1 - Cutting the Superhero Onesie Cookies:</b></span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/---FMAFvnN8c/Ubez9BjWRrI/AAAAAAAADq4/WIY7I2r-oqA/s1600/KlickitatStreet+making+Superman+baby+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="516" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/---FMAFvnN8c/Ubez9BjWRrI/AAAAAAAADq4/WIY7I2r-oqA/s640/KlickitatStreet+making+Superman+baby+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
I used a flag cookie cutter to cut the blowing cape for Baby Superman. To attach the cape, first cut both the flag and the onesie individually. Then use the onesie cutter to cut the flag. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jPZx3KD_Muo/Ube0AfIZAyI/AAAAAAAADrM/hR_ztG-7Hm0/s1600/KlickitatStreet+superhero+baby+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jPZx3KD_Muo/Ube0AfIZAyI/AAAAAAAADrM/hR_ztG-7Hm0/s640/KlickitatStreet+superhero+baby+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Transfer the onesie to the cookie sheet and then attach the cape. Once the cookies are baked and cooled the seam should be strong enough and won't break with normal handling. Try to move the cookies as little as possible though until they have cooled. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7QWDkzHXmX4/Ubez7udehdI/AAAAAAAADqw/f4IJtvMdLHI/s1600/KlickitatStreet+making+Batman+Cape+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="508" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7QWDkzHXmX4/Ubez7udehdI/AAAAAAAADqw/f4IJtvMdLHI/s640/KlickitatStreet+making+Batman+Cape+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
You can also use a bat or bell cookie cutter to add a cape around the onesie like I did for these <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=263974330372659&set=pb.145576235545803.-2207520000.1371105972.&type=3&src=https%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-frc3%2F387148_263974330372659_1614873868_n.jpg&size=960%2C382" target="_blank">Baby Batman and Robin cookies</a>. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vAZcFehnHuE/Ubez_5F359I/AAAAAAAADrA/1ili1gs4oHs/s1600/KlickitatStreet+making+Wonder+Woman+baby+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vAZcFehnHuE/Ubez_5F359I/AAAAAAAADrA/1ili1gs4oHs/s640/KlickitatStreet+making+Wonder+Woman+baby+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
To make a girl's dress for Baby Wonder Woman first cut the onesie shape. Then use a large slightly curved shape like a pumpkin or an oval to cut the sleeve off and cut the skirt in one clean line. If you'd like to leave the sleeve attached then I would suggest using a Christmas tree cutter for the skirt. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LfvEhF-bEZw/Ube0AevHmgI/AAAAAAAADrQ/pz5ZjBQfNyE/s1600/KlickitatStreet+making+Wonder+Woman+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="350" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LfvEhF-bEZw/Ube0AevHmgI/AAAAAAAADrQ/pz5ZjBQfNyE/s640/KlickitatStreet+making+Wonder+Woman+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Use a knife or the large round to cut under the skirt and then transfer the pieces to your cookie sheet. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-R_NoTqd5Cq8/Ubez6msHUiI/AAAAAAAADqo/XqmDUCMcoKQ/s1600/KlickitatStreet+making+Batman+Baby+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="384" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-R_NoTqd5Cq8/Ubez6msHUiI/AAAAAAAADqo/XqmDUCMcoKQ/s640/KlickitatStreet+making+Batman+Baby+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
For Batman I added some little short pants. You can use any squarish shape that is the same size as the onesie cutter. After you've transferred the shapes to the cookie sheet cut a little notch to make the pants.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Part 2: Decorating the Cookies:</b></span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-T4PXb26Olak/UbezwRjzWKI/AAAAAAAADp8/s2vwS_GF5yo/s1600/KlickitatStreet+decorating+superhero+cookies1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-T4PXb26Olak/UbezwRjzWKI/AAAAAAAADp8/s2vwS_GF5yo/s640/KlickitatStreet+decorating+superhero+cookies1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
To decorate the baked cookies start by outlining the shapes in royal icing. You'll notice I filled in the bottom of Batman's pants right away. In smaller areas like this filling the shape while the outline is still wet can help to prevent those pesky craters.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-puJpjyukrqw/UbezyoYQBdI/AAAAAAAADqI/o7r9tPaoLaI/s1600/KlickitatStreet+decorating+superhero+cookies2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-puJpjyukrqw/UbezyoYQBdI/AAAAAAAADqI/o7r9tPaoLaI/s640/KlickitatStreet+decorating+superhero+cookies2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Let the outline dry for several minutes and then fill alternating sections. I used royal icing transfers to make the emblems super easy. (visit <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2012/09/silly-pumpkin-faces-with-royal-icing.html" target="_blank">this post</a> for more information about transfers) Use tweezers to gently place the dry transfer in the wet icing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-umDkPHQjihc/Ubez1G0GP-I/AAAAAAAADqY/g0Ox-jSR-ug/s1600/KlickitatStreet+decorating+superhero+cookies3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-umDkPHQjihc/Ubez1G0GP-I/AAAAAAAADqY/g0Ox-jSR-ug/s640/KlickitatStreet+decorating+superhero+cookies3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Give the icing a couple hours to dry and then fill the remaining sections. Let the cookies dry for several more hours or overnight. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lPGxNC9uWG4/Ubez1ctMxvI/AAAAAAAADqU/g0bGu1iuKkc/s1600/KlickitatStreet+decorating+superhero+cookies4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lPGxNC9uWG4/Ubez1ctMxvI/AAAAAAAADqU/g0bGu1iuKkc/s640/KlickitatStreet+decorating+superhero+cookies4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Finish off with a few quick piping details and you're done! Don't forget to include the diaper snaps so that the cookies look like baby clothes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9fghdk2sls8/Ubezr0c2fSI/AAAAAAAADpw/3VxxBFECUqc/s1600/KlickitatStreet+baby+onesie+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="348" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9fghdk2sls8/Ubezr0c2fSI/AAAAAAAADpw/3VxxBFECUqc/s640/KlickitatStreet+baby+onesie+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Of course, every Super Baby needs an alter-ego so you can always use these shapes with everyday colors!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0NdOw9pBSFE/Ubez2cas9SI/AAAAAAAADqg/XE3CVgx43jk/s1600/KlickitatStreet+Superhero+baby+cookie+platter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="454" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0NdOw9pBSFE/Ubez2cas9SI/AAAAAAAADqg/XE3CVgx43jk/s640/KlickitatStreet+Superhero+baby+cookie+platter.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
See what did I tell you? Cute and Easy!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eJZ6AMEgxbA/UJN5CveXRDI/AAAAAAAADUw/R07xf_Aq7a0/s1600/SarahTrefny.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eJZ6AMEgxbA/UJN5CveXRDI/AAAAAAAADUw/R07xf_Aq7a0/s1600/SarahTrefny.jpg" /></a></div><br />

I'm guessing you could also use them as molds for Rice Crispy Treats and other things too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EzfFTL21SJw/UZ3NKYCg5OI/AAAAAAAADoc/nOkrL_WJi5U/s1600/KlickitatStreet+sand+toy+cookie+cutters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EzfFTL21SJw/UZ3NKYCg5OI/AAAAAAAADoc/nOkrL_WJi5U/s640/KlickitatStreet+sand+toy+cookie+cutters.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm sure I never paid attention to sand toys before but once I decided I could use them as cookie cutters I started finding them all over the place. Just look at these little dinosaurs I found at Target! I love the cute little T-Rex and the set of 4 was only a buck! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LLzcxOKTL5w/UZ3QL6r3QeI/AAAAAAAADo0/7uSO5NsCo88/s1600/KlickitatStreet+dinosaur+cookie+cutters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="390" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LLzcxOKTL5w/UZ3QL6r3QeI/AAAAAAAADo0/7uSO5NsCo88/s640/KlickitatStreet+dinosaur+cookie+cutters.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You use the sand toys pretty much just like any cookie cutter. Be sure to flour them up really well though so the dough doesn't stick inside. If the dough does get stuck just whack the mold on the countertop and the dough will fall out. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-42J-a7Vh-LA/UZ3NJAtSXvI/AAAAAAAADoQ/o9xqrMd2SOM/s1600/KlickitatStreet+seahorse+cookie+cutter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="410" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-42J-a7Vh-LA/UZ3NJAtSXvI/AAAAAAAADoQ/o9xqrMd2SOM/s640/KlickitatStreet+seahorse+cookie+cutter.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Because the edge of a sand toy is not as sharp as a real cookie cutter you might get thin dough wisps around the cookie's edge. (this often happens with plastic cookie cutters too) Don't worry about trying to clean up the edge of the cookie when the dough is unbaked. It's much easier to scrape away any little stray bits with a knife after the cookies are baked and cooled.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7-lrXfauAO8/UZ3NLU4ldbI/AAAAAAAADok/MJ4UWYAlk1E/s1600/KlickitatStreet+smoothing+cookie+edges.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7-lrXfauAO8/UZ3NLU4ldbI/AAAAAAAADok/MJ4UWYAlk1E/s640/KlickitatStreet+smoothing+cookie+edges.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Most of the sand toys I've found have an edge that is good enough for cutting cookie dough but once in a while you'll find an odd one that isn't going to work. The blue whale seen below has a good edge, but the green truck has a weird little lip on the edge and it's not going to work as a cokie cutter. Nuts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FFg0mfpK3pA/UZ3NCVGMpMI/AAAAAAAADoE/eJiSfvp_ksY/s1600/KlickitatStreet+cookie+cutter+edges.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="362" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FFg0mfpK3pA/UZ3NCVGMpMI/AAAAAAAADoE/eJiSfvp_ksY/s400/KlickitatStreet+cookie+cutter+edges.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
You can find these cute little guys in the toy department or in the "dollar-store" section that many stores like Target and Walmart have. Be careful though, if you are anything like me you might get a little carried away! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-43fHkcJbb9w/UZ3NJLmjCII/AAAAAAAADoM/Hv4mSHGwT6o/s1600/KlickitatStreet+sand+toys.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="464" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-43fHkcJbb9w/UZ3NJLmjCII/AAAAAAAADoM/Hv4mSHGwT6o/s640/KlickitatStreet+sand+toys.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
If you're starting the holiday weekend early be safe and have a good one!<br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_uZm5jIeRSs/UYtPOXT6GRI/AAAAAAAADmk/VHiMdAkRI-E/s1600/KlickitatStreet+cookie+tutorial+coloring+dough.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="500" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_uZm5jIeRSs/UYtPOXT6GRI/AAAAAAAADmk/VHiMdAkRI-E/s640/KlickitatStreet+cookie+tutorial+coloring+dough.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
My favorite part of cookie decorating is designing the cookies. A very close second is piping all the final details. To be honest, sometimes I find all the piping and filling in the middle to be a little dull. Plus it can be really time consuming. Why not jump to the fun part and let colored dough do all the heavy lifting? Just like making gingerbread at Christmas you can make simple red hearts with pretty lace piping for Valentine's Day or orange cookies with black piping at Halloween. Today I'm going to make pretty, and oh so simple, colorful flowers for Mother's Day! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ku_EdatfFzs/UYtQAc7KlYI/AAAAAAAADm0/hTBg-PKtVOk/s1600/KlickitatStreet+coloring+cookie+dough.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ku_EdatfFzs/UYtQAc7KlYI/AAAAAAAADm0/hTBg-PKtVOk/s640/KlickitatStreet+coloring+cookie+dough.jpg" width="532" /></a></div>
All you need to get started is your favorite cookie dough and gel food coloring. It is important to use gel colors because the watery-type food coloring will make the dough sticky and the cookies will spread during baking. <br />
<br />
Once your dough is mixed add a few drops of your gel color. If you are using the Wilton pots scoop the gel color out with a small palette knife. I prefer to mix the color into the dough with my stand mixer so my hands don't turn a shocking pink! <br />
<br />
I usually don't chill my dough before baking but if you do then color the dough before chilling. The color will deepen even more as the dough chills in the fridge. Also, don't worry if the dough color is a little shocking because the color will fade a bit during baking. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PxY6w6tCDZQ/UYtQa2i5JRI/AAAAAAAADnA/60whjhUTnQ8/s1600/KlickitatStreet+baking+smooth+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PxY6w6tCDZQ/UYtQa2i5JRI/AAAAAAAADnA/60whjhUTnQ8/s640/KlickitatStreet+baking+smooth+cookies.jpg" width="502" /></a></div>
<br />
Because you're going to leave so much of the cookie's surface exposed during decorating you want the cookies to have nice, smooth tops. To ensure smooth cookies roll out the cookie dough between sheets of parchment paper. If you use rolling guides your cookies will also be perfectly even. I always roll my cookies this way because I don't have to add any extra flour!<br />
<br />
When the cookies are hot out of the oven GENTLY smooth them with a cookie spatula. You don't want to press down on the cookies because you aren't trying to flatten them and you could tear the soft tops. Just let the weight of the spatula smooth down any little bubbles or bumps that may have risen up. <br />
<br />
When the cookies are cool you'll have a nice surface to decorate! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-r41gCu96ca0/UYtOSMCKUlI/AAAAAAAADmQ/Lc4yvjv_qi8/s1600/KlickitatStreet+colored+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="420" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-r41gCu96ca0/UYtOSMCKUlI/AAAAAAAADmQ/Lc4yvjv_qi8/s640/KlickitatStreet+colored+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Now you're ready to pipe the details. My favorite thing about decorating cookies like this is you can use just one color of icing. How easy is that! You could use coordinating icing colors of course but one bag of piping icing is all you need. I like to use a piping consistency that is just a little on the soft side. That way all the little points flatten themselves out. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--JHNjf4gakQ/UYtPUAwm6bI/AAAAAAAADms/_4F21m_txoM/s1600/KlickitatStreet+piped+flower+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="402" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--JHNjf4gakQ/UYtPUAwm6bI/AAAAAAAADms/_4F21m_txoM/s640/KlickitatStreet+piped+flower+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Doodling in icing is so much fun and it becomes really addictive. Don't worry about whether all your loops and dots are "perfect" just have fun with it. Make them as simple or as complex as you like! You could also try brush embroidery on these or the look of lace. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iosSQ3MY1Q4/UYtN9j56fZI/AAAAAAAADmI/IpA_PH3k8HE/s1600/KlickitatStreet+basecoating+cookies.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iosSQ3MY1Q4/UYtN9j56fZI/AAAAAAAADmI/IpA_PH3k8HE/s640/KlickitatStreet+basecoating+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
If the piping alone isn't enough icing for your tastes then start by adding a coat of icing to the back of the cookie before you decorate. Let the icing dry overnight before you flip the cookies over and pipe the tops. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9Mwtm0JWUwc/UYtPHbQfpSI/AAAAAAAADmc/f8crE8AXBhc/s1600/KlickitatStreet+Mother%27s+Day+flower+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="309" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9Mwtm0JWUwc/UYtPHbQfpSI/AAAAAAAADmc/f8crE8AXBhc/s640/KlickitatStreet+Mother%27s+Day+flower+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
A few tips for working with colored dough:<br />
<ul>
<li>Try to use as white of a cookie dough as possible. The dough will lighten a little during baking but if you normally use spices or brown sugar in your sugar cookies switch to a whiter recipe for these. Unless you want all your colors to have a vintage feel and then by all means use brown dough!</li>
<li>If the color of the dough is a little uneven after mixing then knead
it by hand for a minute. Wear plastic gloves to avoid coloring your
hands. </li>
<li>The colors of the dough will fade a bit during baking so tint the dough a little more intense than you want it to end up.</li>
<li>Keep a very close eye on your cookies while baking so they don't brown! </li>

May 4th is a favorite "holiday" of Star Wars fans because of the punny goodness of saying "May the Fourth be with You!" Last year several of the cookie artists I stalk on the internet were posting their Star Wars cookies and I didn't have any so I had to step it up this year. While it isn't quite the fourth yet these aren't quite Star Wars cookies either!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cvqetgx2Si8/UYNzUB_VrdI/AAAAAAAADkw/o8pE6iOUjtc/s1600/KlickitatStreet+Trek+Wars+Cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cvqetgx2Si8/UYNzUB_VrdI/AAAAAAAADkw/o8pE6iOUjtc/s640/KlickitatStreet+Trek+Wars+Cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The next installment of the Star Trek movie reboot series is coming out in a couple of weeks and I for one am looking forward to it because the first one was so good! Writer/director J.J.Abrams did a great job of taking the series in a new direction while still preserving the original series. So much so that Disney went and hired him to direct the new Star Wars trilogy coming in 2015! Woot! I figured that deserved a Star Trek/Star Wars cookie mashup!. The design for the characters came from these super cute cartoon versions of the Star Trek guys called <a href="http://trekmovie.com/2009/02/12/cbs-introduces-star-trek-quogs-new-cartoon-style-tos-character-designs-for-multiple-products/" target="_blank">Quogs</a> and then I gave them the Star Wars treatment. It was kind of surprising how well both casts melded together. <br />

<br />
Spock as Obi-Wan Kenobi is a no-brainer. In the Star Trek reboot Chekov is a wunderkind so he gets to be Luke. <br />

Kirk as Han Solo of course and a Chewie tribble (mmm...tasty).<br />

<br />
Even if Princess Leia and Uhura weren't the only girls it would still be a good fit because they are both a little sassy.<br />

Dr. McCoy as C3PO and Scotty as R2D2. I think Scotty "R2D2" is my favorite of the group! <br />
<br />

<br />
Sulu as a Rebel Pilot. Okay I can't decide if I like Scotty or Sulu best but it's definitely one or them! <br />
<br />

<br />
And a random old school Klingon as Darth Vader (helmet hair!)<br />
<br />
Cookies like this are somewhat complicated and time consuming, for me anyway, and I don't really have a tutorial for them but I'll lay the steps out for you.<br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VN0lpbT-Sw0/UYN3FAnzUuI/AAAAAAAADlM/GPpBTKgkwlA/s1600/KlickitatStreet+decorating+Star+Trek+Wars+Cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VN0lpbT-Sw0/UYN3FAnzUuI/AAAAAAAADlM/GPpBTKgkwlA/s640/KlickitatStreet+decorating+Star+Trek+Wars+Cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<ul>
<li>I made a few adjustments to the <a href="http://trekmovie.com/2009/02/12/cbs-introduces-star-trek-quogs-new-cartoon-style-tos-character-designs-for-multiple-products/" target="_blank">Star Trek Quogs</a> in Photoshop and then printed them at the actual size the cookies were going to be. I drew the Star Wars costumes over my printout, traced their general shape to a template and hand cut the cookie dough. </li>
<li>I used my iPad and the <a href="http://www.cameralucidaapp.com/" target="_blank">Camera Lucida app</a><span id="goog_1998355948"></span><span id="goog_1998355949"></span><a href="http://www.blogger.com/"></a> to take a picture of my drawings and then "project" them onto the cookie to trace. (you can see a detailed post about <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2013/03/how-to-draw-on-cookie-with-ipad.html" target="_blank">drawing with the ipad here</a>)</li>
<li>Next I piped over my drawing and filled in the shapes</li>
<li>And finally I added all the little details.</li>

If you are in need of a bright ray of happiness these "painted" cookies are super easy and super cute! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-25kIMXc1zj4/UXDhp8KAM-I/AAAAAAAADjM/7KzlKnzwKjE/s1600/KlickitatStreet+easy+painted+cookies+tutorial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="548" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-25kIMXc1zj4/UXDhp8KAM-I/AAAAAAAADjM/7KzlKnzwKjE/s640/KlickitatStreet+easy+painted+cookies+tutorial.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I wanted the flower cookies to be a little whimsical and not quite as perfect and symmetrical as flower cutters are made. Besides which, for some reason it seems whimsical flowers always have 5 petals and it is oddly difficult to find a good selection of 5 petal flowers. 6 petal flowers cutters are everywhere. 5 petal...not so much. As it happens though, you don't need flower cutters at all!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s7fPVNH-dAk/UXDhrkdv5MI/AAAAAAAADjk/hKCImXfD5nY/s1600/KlickitatStreet+whimsical+flowers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="464" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s7fPVNH-dAk/UXDhrkdv5MI/AAAAAAAADjk/hKCImXfD5nY/s640/KlickitatStreet+whimsical+flowers.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
To cut whimsical flower cookies you'll need circle cutters or other roundish shapes and a holly cutter. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-G1vSEA67Q4Y/UXDhj2V4QEI/AAAAAAAADi8/8fXKZizY9Eg/s1600/KlickitatStreet+cutting+whimsical+flower+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-G1vSEA67Q4Y/UXDhj2V4QEI/AAAAAAAADi8/8fXKZizY9Eg/s640/KlickitatStreet+cutting+whimsical+flower+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<ol>
<li>Start by cutting the circle. </li>
<li>Then cut little snips of dough away with the various points of the holly cutter</li>
<li>Continue working your way around cutting petals of different sizes. </li>
<li>If you don't have a holly cutter you could also use the point of a heart or a star cutter. The heart cutter will give you a little sharper edge on the petals but you can just smoosh them with your finger. </li>
</ol>
<br />
Once the cookies are baked and cooled flood them in white royal icing and let dry fully for 8-12 hours depending on the humidity in your area. Using a fan will help the icing dry and the base-coat will be shiner too. <br />
<br />
The painting step is really easy and it goes pretty fast. Plus, you don't have to mix icing colors, Yay! I made these little paint daubers by twisting a small square of paper towel around a ball of plastic wrap. The texture of the paper towel makes a nice effect on the cookie and you can keep lots of clean ones on hand. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1sli1a19MI0/UXDkhCrUT9I/AAAAAAAADjs/yNCtRJD5YJA/s1600/KlickitatStreet+painting+flower+cookies+b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1sli1a19MI0/UXDkhCrUT9I/AAAAAAAADjs/yNCtRJD5YJA/s1600/KlickitatStreet+painting+flower+cookies+b.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<ul>
<li>Wet the dauber a little and pick up the first food color patting off some of the excess. Then dab the color on the cookie. You want to use a pat pat pat motion when applying the food color. If you drag or smear the color you'll lose the texture.</li>
<li>Use a clean dauber for each different color dabbing a little color to start and working up to the coverage you want.</li>
<li>If you add more color than you like you can use a dauber with clean water to dab the cookie. Then quickly pat off the excess with a dry paper towel. I think it's best not to do that too much though as you can overwork the surface of the cookie. There's no right or wrong look to these cookies so just let them be spontaneous!</li>
</ul>
On a side note, the odds are pretty good that your hands will be stained every color of the rainbow when you are done. I don't mind having blue and pink hands but if you have a big to-do that night you might want to wear plastic gloves. <br />
<ul>
</ul>
<ol></ol>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DcbE5aEt6MA/UXDhqkzchWI/AAAAAAAADjU/Uds22ZYZvuU/s1600/KlickitatStreet+whimsical+cookies+details.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="327" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DcbE5aEt6MA/UXDhqkzchWI/AAAAAAAADjU/Uds22ZYZvuU/s640/KlickitatStreet+whimsical+cookies+details.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You can also add some spatters to the cookie by flicking the food color with a brush. Let the food color dry on the cookie for a little bit and then pipe a swirl in royal icing. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1hfW0tuw76Y/UXDhj0SQbXI/AAAAAAAADjE/0G1YAR4QDRE/s1600/Klickitat+Street+whimsical+flower+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="274" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1hfW0tuw76Y/UXDhj0SQbXI/AAAAAAAADjE/0G1YAR4QDRE/s640/Klickitat+Street+whimsical+flower+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
That's all there is to it! I think it takes longer to describe the process than to actually paint them.<br />
Have a great weekend and enjoy the sun if you have it! <br />

Oh my goodness, I can't believe Easter is only three days away!? Somehow I didn't get into making many Easter cookies this year. Maybe because I made a <a href="http://www.klickitatstreet.com/2012/03/bunnies-bunnies-and-more-bunnies.html" target="_blank">crazy number of bunnies</a> last year. Anyway, why should the bunny get all the love? Regardless, these little guys are cute and easy and great for the last minute!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_LnVlITRFsI/UVPfwI1SmqI/AAAAAAAADiQ/Z0fkH8aRxwE/s1600/KlickitatStreet+easy+lamb+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="easy sheep cookie tutorial by Klickitat Street" border="0" height="634" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_LnVlITRFsI/UVPfwI1SmqI/AAAAAAAADiQ/Z0fkH8aRxwE/s640/KlickitatStreet+easy+lamb+cookies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
These little sheep are super simple and you can get by with only two icing colors! <br />
<br />
What you will need to make sheep cookies:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>scalloped cookie cutters in two sizes (or you could also use two flower cutters if you don't have scallops)</li>
<li>white royal icing</li>
<li>brownish black royal icing</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J86EsUILj2g/UVPf_FjPWfI/AAAAAAAADig/tsqLpu4D81w/s1600/KlickitatStreet+sheep+cookies+tutorial+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="easy sheep cookie tutorial by Klickitat Street" border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J86EsUILj2g/UVPf_FjPWfI/AAAAAAAADig/tsqLpu4D81w/s640/KlickitatStreet+sheep+cookies+tutorial+1.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<ol>
<li>Start by piecing the two dough shapes together before baking. </li>
<li>Outline the scallop edges with white icing leaving two gaps at the top for ears.</li>
<li>Let the outline set up for a few minutes and flood in white icing. Allow the flood icing to dry for several hours or overnight.</li>
</ol>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-o-FtyjHt1z0/UVPfw1blSuI/AAAAAAAADiY/LYCHtNgJ1V4/s1600/KlickitatStreet+sheep+cookies+tutorial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="easy sheep cookie tutorial by Klickitat Street" border="0" height="280" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-o-FtyjHt1z0/UVPfw1blSuI/AAAAAAAADiY/LYCHtNgJ1V4/s640/KlickitatStreet+sheep+cookies+tutorial.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
4. Once the white icing is dry, pipe two little blobs with the brownish black icing for ears. Add eyes and a little nose too.<br />
5. Pipe around the cookie edges and add random squiggles here and there for the look of fluffiness. You may also want to add a little bow tie just because. :)<br />
<br />
That's it! Fast and easy and oh so cute.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h9nSKEY58kE/UVPfuN7zsYI/AAAAAAAADiI/5derp0eGHe0/s1600/KlickitatStreet+Easter+farm+cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" aster="" border="0" by="" cookies="" farm="" height="422" klickitat="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h9nSKEY58kE/UVPfuN7zsYI/AAAAAAAADiI/5derp0eGHe0/s640/KlickitatStreet+Easter+farm+cookies.jpg" street="" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Of course a few bunnies might just sneak up on you too! <br />
<br />
